Has Rodri’s injury derailed Manchester City’s title challenge?

Rodri has been one of Manchester City’s most important players over the last two seasons. His consistent performances for club and country have made him one of the favorite contenders for the Ballon d’Or this year. He had an incredible summer leading Spain to a Euro Championships title, but it all blew up when he suffered an unfortunate ACL injury in the league game against Arsenal at the Etihad in September 2024. Pep Guardiola confirmed a few days later that the injury will rule him out for the season leaving Manchester City in a precarious position.

We all are well aware of Man City’s squad depth but we also know that there are very few defensive midfielders in the world that could boast of the quality and world-class abilities of Rodri. He breaks up moves, thwarts opposition attacks but also controls the game from a deeper midfield position. He also has a rocket of a left foot that has helped Man City find winners in desperate situations – a clutch player by definition.

Though Pep Guardiola has deputised Mateo Kova?i? in his position and role, the effectiveness hasn’t been the same with City leaking goals literally every game. Still, they have managed to grind out results with their experience. They are an experienced side with a world-class coach and could still beat mid-table teams with ease but they have only played two Top 6 teams in Chelsea and Arsenal as of now and conceded a draw at home to Arsenal. It remains to be seen how they cope against the big teams’ home and away. They haven’t looked at their usual best so far due to Rodri and Kevin de Bruyne missing. De Bruyne might come back in a few weeks but it still doesn’t solve their defensive issues in midfield. In the Champions League as well, playing against top quality teams could be a challenge with a makeshift option replacing a world-class midfielder.

Pep Guardiola also mentioned that they are looking at a replacement in January which could mean they could go for potential DM prospects in the January window. If they manage to get a proper defensive midfielder in the winter, they could still lead the title challenge but if they don’t bring in a reinforcement, then the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool might hold the upper hand. I still believe it’s too premature to doubt their title credentials as they have firepower and experience in the squad but losing out on a world-class player does have an impact on a team throughout a season. Many rival fans believe that Rodri’s absence has put their Premier League title and Champions League hopes in jeopardy and hence it will be interesting to see how Pep Guardiola finds a solution to his midfield conundrum.
