Commonwealth Games Glasgow 2026 – DAY 5 Recap

India performed superbly on Day 5 of the Commonwealth games, bagging six medals – five in weightlifting and one in high jump. India opened their medals account with para powerlifter Jhandu Kumar on the second day of the games as he won bronze in the Men’s heavyweight category. 

Then on the fourth day, Saikhom Mirabai Chanu became the first women weightlifter in CWG history to win three consecutive gold medals. In doing so, she also broke the CWG record in the 48 kg category with an incredible total lift of 190 kg (85 kg snatch + 105 kg clean and jerk). 

Let’s take a look at India’s schedule and medals on Day 5 of the CWG 2026 – 

CWG 2026 Athletics 

Men’s 100 m – India’s medal hopeful Gurindervir Singh finished second in his Heat 4 with a speed of 10.39 seconds but failed to reach the semi-finals as he was placed in 20th place after the heats and only the top 17 qualify for the semis. 

Men’s Long Jump – Murali Sreeshankar and Lokesh Sathyanathan ensured qualification for the Men’s Long Jump final by clearing the qualification mark of 8.0 metres. 

Men’s 110 m Hurdle – Tejas Shirse created history by becoming the first Indian to qualify for the Men’s 110 m hurdle final but finished last in the medal race having sustained a stress fracture injury. 

Men’s High Jump – Three Indians were in the hunt for medals at the Men’s High Jump finals with Indian medal hopeful Sarvesh Anil Kushare bagging a silver medal after clearing 2.25 metres. Jamaica’s Romaine Beckford took Gold after clearing 2.25 metre albeit on his first attempt while Kushare cleared in his third attempt, missing the gold by one extra attempt. 

Tejaswin Shankar had to withdraw from the final with an unfortunate knee injury while Aadarsh Ram Jothi Shankar finished fifth with a best jump of 2.15 metre. 

CWG 2026 Para Athletics 

Men’s T38 100 m – Rakeshbhai Bhatt (11.82s) and Shreyansh Trivedi (12.22s) finished fifth and sixth respectively in the Men’s T38 100 m finals. 

Women’s Shotput F57 – India struck gold in the women’s shotput F57 with Sharmila Dhankar who finished with a season best throw of 9.81 metres to bag first place. India’s Shilpa K Shyla came fourth but she was later elevated to a bronze medal following a protest/disqualification, creating India’s first double-podium finish of the Games. 

CWG 2026 Weight Lifting

Women’s 53 Kg Category – India continues to find success in weightlifting with Gyaneshwari Yadav securing a silver medal in the Women’s 53 kg, producing a personal best of 199 kg (88 kg in snatch and 111 kg in clean and jerk). Nigeria’s Didih Onome Omolola claimed gold with 206kg. 

Women’s 58 Kg Category – India’s Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam bagged a bronze medal in the Women’s 53 kg category with a total lift of 199 kg (87kg in the snatch and 112kg in the clean and jerk). 

Men’s 79 Kg Category – Indian weightlifter Valluri Ajaya Babu won the silver medal in the men’s 79 kg event. He lifted a total of 330 kg (149 kg snatch and a 181 kg clean and jerk). Malaysia’s Erry Hidayat Muhammad beat him to the gold by a margin of just one kg. Ajaya Babu also smashed the games record in the snatch with a massive lift of 149 kg. 

CWG 2026 Boxing

Men’s 70 kg category – India’s campaign in the Men’s 70 kg boxing ended with Sumit Kundu losing in the Round of 16. 

Men’s 80 kg category – Ankush Panghal won his bout 5-0 against Antigua and Barbuda’s Zalaan Jan and advanced to the quarter-finals of the Men’s heavyweight 80 kg category. 

Women’s 51 kg category – Sakshi Choudhary also advanced to the quarter-finals of the Women’s 51 kg flyweight category, defeating Botswana’s Lethabo Modukanele by a unanimous 5-0 decision in the RO16. 

CWG 2026 Swimming

Men’s 200 m butterfly – Indian Olympian swimmer Sajan Prakash finished eighth in the 200 m butterfly final. 

Men’s 800 m freestyle – Indian swimmer Aryan Nehra finished eighth in the 800 m freestyle swimming category. 

CWG 2026 Para Swimming 

Men’s 100m breaststroke SB9 – Indian para swimmer Swatik Patel finished fifth in the Men’s 100 m breaststroke final with a timing of 1:15.82s.

CWG 2026 Lawn Bowls 

Men’s Singles – India’s Putul Sonowal crashed to his second consecutive defeat after losing 0.5-1.5 to Malta’s Shaun Parnis in the Men’s singles lawn bowls event. 

CWG 2026 3×3 Wheelchair Basketball 

India’s campaign in the women’s wheelchair 3×3 basketball competition at the Commonwealth Games 2026 came to an end after a 7-6 defeat to Nigeria in their final Pool B match. Indian team of Reena R Gupta, Laxmi R Rayannavar, Minakshi H Jadhav and Ritu C Irengbam failed to make it to the knockout rounds, losing all their matches of their Pool B group. 

CWG 2026 Artistic Gymnastics

Women’s Vault – Indian gymnast Protistha Samantha of India finished seventh in the Women’s Vault category, ending her CWG 2026 campaign without a medal. 

Medals Tally

Currently, Australia leads the way at the top with 26 Gold medals already, followed by England (8 G) and Canada (7 G). India sits in eighth place with two golds and 10 medals total so far.
