The Austrian 27-year-old, Dominic Thiem, has shown the world that he is going to be a tough contender in every tournament he participates in and has proved it by giving some serious problems to all the top tennis players in the past few years. Let us have a look at his season overview for the year 2020.
ATP Cup – Thiem started his 2020 campaign by playing in the ATP Cup representing Team Austria. They, unfortunately, lost in the group stages. Thiem played three matches defeating Diego Schwartzman and losing to Borna Coric and Hubert Hurkacz.
Australian Open – Dominic Thiem was seeded fifth in Australian Open and after reaching the quarter-finals, he had to face an uphill task of taking on Rafael Nadal. To everyone’s surprise, Thiem managed to beat Nadal in a four-set match by winning three tiebreakers as well. He then defeated Alex Zverev in the Semifinals and faced World number 1, Novak Djokovic, in his first Grand Slam final. He was, however, beaten by Novak Djokovic in five sets.
Thiem was one of the first players to arrive early for the Indian Wells which was cancelled due to the Corona Virus situation all over the world. As all the other tours were postponed, Thiem participated in many exhibition matches like the Adria Tour exhibition event in Belgrade, the Bett1 Aces in Berlin, Austrian Pro series event and also participated in his own event’s final Thiem’s 7.
Cincinnati Masters – After the resumption of the tournaments, Thiem took part in the Cincinnati master in New York but lost in his opening match against Filip Krajinovi?.
US Open – Being the second seed in the tournament, Dominic Thiem defeated 2014 Champion Marin Cilic in his third-round match. Then he defeated Felix Auger Aulassime in the next round. His winning run continued as he then defeated Alex Minaur in the quarters, Daniil Medvedev in the Semi’s and finally set a mouth-watering encounter against Alexander Zverev which he won after losing the first two sets of the match and lifted his first-ever Grand Slam Title.
French Open – Dominic Thiem was then seeded third at the French Open where he reached the quarter-finals but eventually lost to Diego Schwartzman in a five-set match.
Vienna Open – Thiem entered the Vienna Open as the defending champion looking forward to lift the trophy once again but eventually lost to Andre Rublev in the quarter-finals.
