England vs Australia 2nd T20I: Match Preview and Predictions

A back-and-forth game in the opening T20I saw Australia run away with a relatively comfortable win in Phil Salt’s captaincy debut for the hosts.

England now have to win the second T20I if they are to stay alive in the series and deny their arch-rivals a white-ball series win away from home.

Ahead of the second T20I between England and Australia, here are our match predictions and preview.

The visitors had the perfect start as Travis Head went about doing his normal business, smashing 59 from 23 deliveries while being ably supported by Matthew Short, who got the nod over Jake Fraser-McGurk, to help the Aussies run away to 86/0 inside six overs.

England captain, Phil Salt, then immediately brought on his spin trio of Adil Rashid, Liam Livingstone, and Jacob Bethell put a stop to the runs. Combined with some interesting choice of shots from the batters, the hosts were able to bowl out Australia for 179 inside 20 overs, with Jofra Archer and Saqib Mahmood nailing the yorkers at the end to see the visitors manage only 93 runs after the opening six overs. 

In the second innings, the Australian seamers were well assisted by their fielders early on, which kept England in check. Barring Livingstone, no other English batter could really get going. For the second game, England will hope that, with a relatively inexperienced batting lineup, their big names like Salt, Will Jacks, Livingstone and Sam Curran step up with the bat. With the ball, Sean Abbott, Adam Zampa, and Josh Hazlewood were brilliant in the first game, and Mitchell Marsh will hope for more of the same moving forward.

For the hosts, it was a good outing with the ball apart from the Powerplay onslaught. Archer and Mahmood were solid in the death overs, while the wily-old veteran Rashid spun a web around the Australian batters in the middle overs and was backed up well by the young Bethell and Livingstone. The English camp would’ve been happy chasing 180 after the start Australia got and will be hoping that their batting unit comes together for the remaining games. 

The second T20I will be played at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff, which has generally seen low-scoring games with assistance to the slow and spin bowlers. Australia’s line-up will once again hold the advantage, with the visitors boasting a more experienced XI, which was on full display in the first game.
