England vs Australia 3rd ODI: Match Preview and Predictions

Alex Carey and the Australia bowlers made sure the visitors picked up another crucial win in Leeds, putting England in must-win situation for the third ODI.

The hosts have their task cut out if they want to avoid going down at home. Ahead of the third ODI, here’s our match preview and predictions.

After a run-fest in the opening game, Leeds saw a much more balanced game as the visitors were put into bat first. Travis Head, opening with Matt Short instead of Mitchell Marsh, gave Australia a brisk start once again, and while the English bowlers chipped in regularly with the odd wicket, Alex Carey shepherded the tail brilliantly to take Australia to a respectable 270. 

Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc wrecked the English top order early on and, barring a fighting 49 from Jamie Smith and some lower-order contributions from the likes of Jacob Bethell, Brydon Carse, and Adil Rashid, it was a sorry performance with the bat from the hosts. All the Australian bowlers chipped in with wickets, with Glenn Maxwell also joining in on the party late on.

The hosts also had a decent showing with the ball in the first innings compared to the first ODI, though England did let the Aussies off the hook and allowed them to get to 270 after getting them to 161/6. 

Moving to the Riverside Ground at Chester-le-Street in Durham, we should expect a high-scoring game with some assistance for the seamers. Australia once again are the favourites, and the likes of Hazelwood and Starc will be key for the visitors.
