Day 9 of the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup just saw one game played between South Africa and Bangladesh in New York. Here’s how it panned out.
The wicket in New York continued to prove challenging for the batters as South Africa decided to have a go at the Bangladeshi bowlers after winning the toss. Their woes at the top of the order continued, and the Proteas found themselves in all sorts of trouble at 23/4 within the powerplay.
Once again, David Miller put his hand up to save the South Africa innings and made 29 off 38. However, it was Heinrich Klaasen’s 46 off 44 that took South Africa to a defendable total of 113.
With less than six runs an over needed in the chase, Bangladesh always seemed to be in control of their innings. However, Towhid Hridoy, who scored 37 in 34 balls, fell to Kagiso Rabada at the start of the 18th over, and this proved to be the turning point. Eventually, the Asian side fell four runs short and South Africa won this thrilling encounter.
With this win, South Africa are top of Group D in the 2024 Men’s T20 WC with six points from their three matches, while Bangladesh are second with two points after as many matches. The Netherlands also have two points on the board but have a worse net run rate than Bangladesh.
First innings: South Africa 113/6 in 20 overs
Second innings: Bangladesh 109/7 in 20 overs
