The 2027 ICC Men’s 50-over World Cup is now officially just a year away, with the ICC announcing the fixtures and the dates for the World Cup that will be held in South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe. The opening game will be held on October 2nd, with the Final of the tournament to be held on November 21st.

Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg is set to host the Final of the competition, while Newlands stadium in Cape Town will host the opening game of the competition that pits 2023 World Cup Finalists India and Australia on October 7th.

The teams participating in the 2027 World Cup are divided into 2 groups of 6. Group A consists of Afghanistan, defending champions Australia, India, Pakistan, Zimbabwe, and a Qualifier. Group B is looking like the more tougher group on paper, with the likes of hosts South Africa, England, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and a yet to be decided Qualifier.

This time around there is a new tournament format. Unlike last World Cup, where every team played each other once followed by the semifinals and the final, the 2027 edition will see a second round post the Group stages called the Super 7, where the top-3 from each group and the best 4th place team from both the groups will make it to the next stage of the tournament.

It is worth noting that just like the 2024 and the 2026 T20 World Cups, teams have already been given pre-seedings, which raises the prospects of a second India-Pakistan contest, with both sides already scheduled to play in the Group stages on October 10th in Johannesburg.

There are some rather tasty fixtures apart from India- Australia and India-Pakistan as well. Afghanistan-Australia carries an already feisty undertone to their clash given the frosty relationship between the two sides and the fact that Australia broke Afghan hearts in the 2023 World Cup clash at Mumbai. Bangladesh-Sri Lanka games have rapidly become the game to watch due to the sheer drama involved between these two nations, while South Africa-New Zealand, South Africa-England, and Pakistan-Afghanistan will be the other games that will be worth watching.

In all, the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup will be hosted in 12 venues across 3 countries. Windhoek (Namibia). Victoria Falls, Harare, and Bulawayo (Zimbabwe). Cape Town, Paarl, Johannesburg, Tshwane (Centurion), Durban, Bloemfontein, KuGompo City (East London), and Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), all in South Africa.

The Super Series will be held from 2nd October onwards, at a venue which is yet to be decided. Co-hosts Zimbabwe are set to play all their group stage matches in Zimbabwe itself. Newlands will have a semifinal at the venue, with the other semi to be played in Tshwane (Centurion). Durban will host 5 games including the final Super 7 game of the tournament.

The advance announcement of the venues and the fixtures is in stark contrast to the hassles and hurdles in announcing the fixtures and venues for the 2023 World Cup held in India, which were announced less than 2 months away from the tournament that prompted a lot of chaos and confusion in terms of purchasing tickets for the games across the venues for the other teams.

This could probably be the last World Cup for the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and maybe even perhaps Jasprit Bumrah.
