IPL 2026 | Match 53: CSK vs LSG| Preview and Predictions

Match 53 of the 2026 Indian Premier League season will see a clash between the Chennai Super Kings and bottom of the table Lucknow Super Giant on 10th May at the Chepauk.

Indian Premier League 2026 | Match 53: Chennai Super Kings vs Lucknow Super Giants | 15:30 IST, 10th May

The Chennai Super Kings started the season poorly but they have climbed up the table to sixth place after winning three out of their last five matches. The addition of Mukesh Choudhary to their bowling lineup has transformed their attack. Also, the form of Sanju Samson at the top of the order has assisted them in getting good starts both while setting a target or chasing one. The spin twins Akeal Hosein and Noor Ahmad have also stepped up to trouble the opposition batters. Their batting has been a concern though as barring Samson, none of the batters have performed well so far, especially captain Ruturaj Gaikwad who has been dismal with the bat so far, having scored only two 50+ scores.

Their last league match was against the Delhi Capitals on a tricky and slow Delhi wicket. DC opted to bat first but couldn’t get going against a disciplined CSK bowling. The two spinners bowled exceptionally well to take three wickets as DC could only manage 155/7.  Chasing the target, Samson was yet again the top-scorer with an unbeaten 87 runs with the young Kartik Sharma supporting him with a well-made 41. Both the players took their side home in 17.3 overs with eight wickets in hand.

Lucknow Super Giants are having another abysmal season as they look far off from the play-off yet again. Sitting at the bottom of the table, they have one win from the last six matches. Both LSG and the Gujarat Titans joined the IPL in the same season and while GT has been to two finals and won the IPL once, LSG are still waiting to qualify for their first play-offs and this season too it seems improbable.

Though they would be happy that they finally broke the losing streak with a win against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru a few days back. In a rain-disrupted match, LSG batted first and yet again, their best batter this season, Mitchell Marsh gave them a top start and ended up scoring an IPL hundred. Nicholas Pooran too contributed with a quickfire 38 off 23 balls but it was a late blitz from captain Rishabh Pant that took LSG past 200.

Responding to the big target, RCB lost Bethell early with Mohammed Shami getting his scalp in the first over. Virat Kohli went on a duck to Prince Yadav in the next over. Though captain Rajat Patidar played a valiant knock with support from Tim David and Romario Shepherd, they fell short by six runs in the end, losing the match.

Although, mathematically it’s still possible for LSG to qualify for the play-offs, they would need to win all their remaining games which is quite improbable looking at their inconsistent performances this season.

Coming to this particular match-up, CSK are heavily dependent on Samson in the batting department with the other batters not stepping up and hence if LSG get him early, they can restrict them to a smaller total. Similarly, if CSK gets Marsh early, it could spell trouble for LSG. Hence, it’s important for the opening bowlers on either side to bowl well early on. Prince Yadav and Mukesh Choudhary could hold the key for LG and CSK with the new ball.

The pitch at Chepauk has been batter friendly this season but it does slow down in the second innings and therefore whoever wins the toss should bat first and set a 200+ total in order to make the chase difficult for the opposition. Former captain and veteran wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni is still missing from the CSK batting lineup, which has been a huge loss for them as his experience and composure has helped them in tough situations over the years. LSG will be happy with captain Pant’s performance in the previous game as he had been struggling for form since the start of the season.

This one is tricky to call but since CSK has shown improvements in the last few games, they hold the edge over LSG and could go on to win on home turf.

Fantasy XI: Mitchell Marsh, Sanju Samson, Nicholas Pooran, Rishabh Pant, Aiden Markram, Dewald Brevis, Mohammed Shami, Noor Ahmad, Prince Yadav, Akeal Hosein, Jamie Overton.

Venue: MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai

Winner’s Prediction: Chennai Super Kings
