IPL 2026 | Match 53: CSK vs LSG | Preview and Predictions
Match 53 of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season will see a clash between the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and bottom-of-the-table Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on May 10 at Chepauk.
For the game, here we present our preview and predictions.
Indian Premier League 2026 | Match 53: Chennai Super Kings vs Lucknow Super Giants | 15:30 IST, May 10, 2026
The Super Kings started the season poorly but have climbed up the table to sixth place after winning three of their last five matches. The addition of Mukesh Choudhary to the bowling line-up has transformed their attack. The form of Sanju Samson at the top of the batting order has further assisted them in getting good starts. Spin twins Akeal Hosein and Noor Ahmad have also stepped up to trouble the opposition batters.
Batting remains a bit of a concern for CSK, however. Barring Samson, none of their batters have performed well so far, especially captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, who has been dismal and has registered only two 50+ scores, both at a sluggish rate.
CSK’s last match was against the Delhi Capitals on a tricky and slow Delhi wicket. DC opted to bat first but couldn’t get going against a disciplined CSK bowling unit, whose two chief spinners bowled exceptionally well and took three wickets between them; ultimately, DC could only manage 155/7. Chasing the target, Samson was yet again the top scorer with an unbeaten 87, with the young Kartik Sharma supporting him with a well-made 41. Both took their side home in 17.3 overs with eight wickets in hand.
The Super Giants, on the other hand, are having another abysmal season and look set to miss out on the play-offs yet again. Sitting at the bottom of the table, they have one win from their last six outings. They joined the IPL at the same time as the Gujarat Titans, and while GT have been to two finals and lifted the trophy in their debut season, LSG are yet to go beyond the play-offs, and this season that too is looking near impossible.
That said, LSG would be happy that they finally broke their losing streak with a win against Royal Challengers Bengaluru a few days back. In a rain-disrupted game, LSG batted first, and yet again their best batter this season, Mitchell Marsh, gave them a top start and ended up scoring a hundred. Nicholas Pooran too contributed with a quickfire 38 off 23 before a late blitz from captain Rishabh Pant took LSG past 200.
Responding to the big target, RCB lost Bethell early, with Mohammed Shami getting his scalp in the first over. Virat Kohli went for a duck to Prince Yadav in the next over. Though captain Rajat Patidar played a valiant knock, with support from Tim David and Romario Shepherd, the defending champions fell short by six runs in the end.
Although mathematically it’s still possible for LSG to qualify for the play-offs, they will at least need to win all their remaining games, which looks highly unlikely given their inconsistent performances this season.
Coming to this match-up, CSK are heavily dependent on Sanju Samson in the batting department, with their other batters not stepping up; if LSG get him early, they can restrict them to a modest total. Similarly, if CSK get Marsh early, it could spell trouble for LSG. Hence, it’s important for the opening bowlers on either side to deliver early on. Prince Yadav and Mukesh Choudhary could hold the key for the Super Giants and Super Kings, respectively, with the new ball.
The pitch at Chepauk has been batter-friendly this season, but it does slow down in the second innings. Therefore, whoever wins the toss should bat first and set a 200+ total in order to make the chase difficult for the opposition.
Former India captain and veteran wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni is still missing from the CSK batting line-up, which has been a huge loss for the team, as his experience and composure have helped them in tough situations over the years. In the other camp, LSG will be happy with captain Rishabh Pant’s performance in the previous game, as he has been largely struggling for form this season.
This one is tricky to call, but since CSK have shown improvements in the last few games, they hold the edge over LSG and could go on to win on home turf.
