Match 53 of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season will see a clash between the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Ekana Stadium on 15 May 2026.
For the game, here we present our preview and predictions.
While CSK are sitting in fifth place and still very much in the reckoning for a play-off spot, LSG are already out of the competition and are languishing at the bottom of the table.
Urvil Patel was the star of the show in the previous game as he scored the joint-fastest fifty in IPL history, hitting 50 in just 13 balls. Rajasthan Royals batter Yashasvi Jaiswal hit a 13-ball 50 in 2023.
Batting first, LSG managed a 200+ score with the help of opener Josh Inglis, who hit a blistering 85 off 33, though he didn’t receive much support barring cameos from Shahbaz Ahmed (43* off 25) and Himmat Singh (17 off 12). Jamie Overton was the pick of the bowlers for CSK with a spell of 36/3 from his four overs.
In response, CSK made a decent start through the in-form Sanju Samson (28 off 14) and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad (42 off 28), who finally got some runs under his belt. However, it was the explosive batting of Urvil Patel (65 off 23) that took the game away from LSG. By the time he got out after the ninth over, CSK had already crossed 120 and were looking set to chase the total down comfortably. Even though they lost a couple of wickets, the damage had been done for the Super Giants and the record IPL champions picked up a five-wicket win.
LSG’s problems this season have stemmed from inconsistent batting, especially from their two key overseas batters, Nicholas Pooran and Aiden Markram. Captain Rishabh Pant hasn’t performed up to his usual high standards either.
Their bowling has also struggled, with spinner Digvesh Rathi not having much impact and the pacers going for a lot of runs — except for Prince Yadav, who has impressed massively this season.
CSK struggled at the beginning of the season but have turned around their form in surprising fashion. Without their maverick MS Dhoni (out with injury), the Chennai franchise looked out of ideas. However, they have now won four of their five games and still have a chance to make the play-offs.
Their batting still looks a bit rusty, but the dependency on Sanju Samson seems to have dissipated and other players are taking up the responsibility to pull them through matches. CSK’s bowling has looked more convincing as well, with Anshul Kamboj, Jamie Overton, and Mukesh Chaudhary providing the wicket-taking ability, and Akeal Hosein and Noor Ahmad offering variety with their spin.
That said, new signings as well as Shivam Dube have been underwhelming, to say the least. If CSK have the ambition to make the play-offs, there are still some things that need to click for them.
Coming to this match-up, since LSG are already out of the race for the play-offs, they’re now solely playing for pride and will try to finish the season on a positive note. CSK, meanwhile, will be more desperate to win given their play-off aspirations.
The Ekana ground has a batting-friendly pitch, though it’s not just a flat track and does offer something to the bowlers. If a bowler gets his line and length correct, this could be a competitive fixture.
Looking at their form and intention to win at all costs, we believe CSK will go on to win this game.
