In Match 66 of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, we have a team looking to lock in a top-two finish taking on one of the league’s most successful teams, who are looking to round out their campaign with a win, still having an outside chance of getting into the play-offs.

As the Gujarat Titans (GT) get ready to host the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for their last league-stage home game of the season, we take a look at how things are shaping up for both sides.

For the game, here we present our preview and predictions.

Indian Premier League 2026 | Match 66: Gujarat Titans vs Chennai Super Kings | 19:30 IST, May 21, 2026

The Super Kings come into the final game of their IPL 2026 campaign after a disappointing loss to SunRisers Hyderabad in their final home game of the season. That defeat has left them with a very slim chance of making the play-offs, but CSK will know that that door is more or less shut.

CSK’s batting has been woeful. Whenever Sanju Samson has failed to stick around beyond the Powerplay, they’ve barely won any games. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has just not got going this season and looked unable to keep up with the likes of Samson, Urvil Patel, and Kartik Sharma.

In fact, Patel’s explosive cameos and Kartik Sharma’s promising scores have been two of the biggest positives for the team, but Patel has failed to convert his starts for the most part, and CSK will hope that he finishes the season with a big score. In Sharma, meanwhile, the team have discovered a solid middle-order batter around whom the finishers can see off the innings.

Dewald Brevis and Shivam Dube have also had a mixed year and haven’t provided the team with big finishes. All in all, the CSK batting order has failed to click as a unit, and the team will hope to at least round out the season with a big performance on a batting-friendly wicket.

As far as their bowling is concerned, a late-season injury to Jamie Overton has added to CSK’s woes, as injuries had already hampered them. Mukesh Choudhary has been impressive with the new ball, while the now-fit-again Spencer Johnson has returned to the team, though he is low on match practice, which shows on the field.

Anshul Kamboj started the season by taking wickets in each game, but in recent outings he has been leaking runs and the wickets have dried up. Akeal Hosein and Noor Ahmad have been CSK’s top performers recently, but Gaikwad’s usage of Hosein — or lack thereof — is worrying given how economical the left-arm spinner has been while also providing regular breakthroughs. Gaikwad has also not utilised Shivam Dube’s bowling prowess properly; the 32-year-old has surprisingly bowled more for India this year than for the Super Kings.

On the other hand, their loss to the Kolkata Knight Riders in their previous game ended the Titans’ four-match winning streak, but it should be nothing more than a blip in the course of what has been an incredibly well-paced campaign.

SunRisers Hyderabad’s win over the Chennai Super Kings on May 18 not only sealed a play-off berth for the Men in Orange, it also confirmed the same for GT, who now have a chance to finish in the top two should they finish with a win over CSK.

GT have been one of the most well-balanced teams this year, with captain Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan, and Jos Buttler once again doing the heavy lifting with the bat at the top of the order. GT’s middle order hasn’t really clicked this season, however, with Washington Sundar, Jason Holder, and Rahul Tewatia getting the odd score here and there. Going into the play-offs, the management will hope the middle-order batters get some runs and time in the middle.

As far as bowling is concerned, GT’s attack has been carried by their incredible opening duo of Kagiso Rabada and Mohammed Siraj, both of whom have regularly provided breakthroughs while being economical at the top. Jason Holder has been a strong support act to the new-ball bowlers, while Rashid Khan continues to be the lead spinner for the team.

Fielding, meanwhile, was a bit of an issue for GT in their previous game at Eden Gardens, and captain Gill will expect his fielders to pull up their socks, especially now that they are in the most important stage of the tournament.

The Ahmedabad ground has generally been a high-scoring one. However, now that we’re deep into the tournament, with several matches played here, the strip has slowed down a bit, as noticed in the last couple of games. There is some purchase for the quick bowlers at the top with the new ball, with the slower bowlers being key in the middle overs with their variations.

The Narendra Modi Stadium has generally been a fortress for the Gujarat Titans. Given they are the more well-balanced and in-form team coming into this game, expect GT to round out their league-stage campaign with a win.

Fantasy XI: Shubman Gill (c), Sanju Samson (wk), Jos Buttler, Dewald Brevis, Shivam Dube, Jason Holder, Washington Sundar, Rashid Khan, Mohammed Siraj, Kagiso Rabada (vc), Mukesh Choudhary

Venue: Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad
