Iran vs New Zealand | FIFA World Cup 2026 — Group Stage | Preview and Prediction

The second fixture of Group G at the 2026 FIFA World Cup sees Iran take on New Zealand in what promises to be a robust and physical encounter.

Here are two sides that like their tackles and the physical side of the game, and both will be all set to get those all-important three points to start their campaign on a high note.

Believe it or not, despite all the favourites to win the World Cup being under the spotlight, it is Iran who will have the most eyes on them, and not for footballing reasons. With Iran’s geopolitical stand-off against the US still not abating, its ripples have reached the football team, and there have been genuine concerns about the team not being able to participate in the World Cup.

However, an uneasy truce has been reached, which has allowed the Iranians to change their base to Mexico, on the condition that they immediately leave the US after completing their games; they play all their group stage games in the States.

That has not deterred the spirits of the Yuzhaye Irani, who have been putting in the hard yards and have been preparing for arguably their biggest World Cup campaign.

New Zealand, on the other hand, return to the World Cup for the first time since 2010, where they finished as the only unbeaten side in the tournament. They will definitely be looking to do something along those lines this time around as well.

On paper, Iran like to play a 4-2-3-1, but in their last two friendlies they have done a little bit of a switcheroo and gone with a 3-6-1 and then a 4-4-2, leaving the opponents on their toes. It will be interesting to see what formation they use against New Zealand.

As far as New Zealand are concerned, they will be the ultimate underdogs given that they are the lowest-ranked side in the tournament. They will have to be dogged and pragmatic and try and nick something out of this game, given that their group also contains Belgium and Egypt.

Both sides will hope their strikers play key roles in their side’s fortunes this World Cup. Mehdi Taremi and Chris Wood have a lot of goals and experience between them, so a lot will rest on their broad shoulders; expect them not to back down.

This is going to be a rather cagey affair, with both sides mostly inclined to play a defensively oriented style of football. This game has all the hallmarks of a draw.
