With the new season just around the corner, the National Basketball Association (NBA) and blockchain sports game brand Sorare have agreed to jointly develop an official NFT-based fantasy game.
In the game, players will be able to assemble a team that will compete against other users by collecting, trading, and playing with NFTs that represent players in the league.
Sorare hopes that this agreement with a second non-football organisation—the first was with Major League Baseball (MLB) earlier this year—will draw a fresh audience to its ecosystem. In 2021, Sorare signed similar deals with Spanish football league LaLiga and the German Bundesliga.
Commenting on the deal, Adam Silver, NBA commissioner said:
“Our partnership with Sorare will give NBA fans an entirely new way to engage with our teams and players.
“With Sorare’s emerging NFT fantasy platform, we see significant opportunities to broaden our community of fans and grow NBA basketball around the world.“
Nicolas Julia, Co-founder and Chief Executive at Sorare also commented:
“Basketball is one of the most popular sports in the world and we are excited to bring fans even closer to their favourite teams and players through Sorare: NBA.
“The NBA and the players have been at the forefront of digital experiences and collectibles and our game gives basketball fans the ultimate sports entertainment experience where they can play like a general manager, own their own game, and foster real-world connections.“
