In a surprise turn of events, the BWT Alpine Formula One Team have announced that team principal Oliver Oakes has resigned with immediate effect.
The development follows a Miami Grand Prix that saw neither Alpine driver make the points.
Oakes, a former racer himself, was revealed as the new Alpine team boss in August 2024, replacing Bruno Famin. He also served as Hitech GP’s team principal post his racing career.
Alpine have confirmed that Flavio Briatore, former team principal of Benetton and Renault and a veteran of the sport who is currently serving as Executive Advisor, will take up the role of team principal on an interim basis.
Alpine F1 released the following statement on Oakes’ resignation:
“BWT Alpine Formula One Team announces that Oliver Oakes has resigned from his role as Team Principal. The team has accepted his resignation with immediate effect. As of today, Flavio Briatore will continue as Executive Advisor and will also be covering the duties previously performed by Oliver Oakes. The team would like to thank Oliver for his efforts since he joined last summer and for his contribution in helping the team secure sixth place in the 2024 Constructors’ Championship. The team will not be making any further comment.“
The French F1 outfit have had a rough start to the 2025 Formula One season, sitting second-last in the Constructors’ Standings with seven points, with only Sauber behind them. They’ve scored points just twice this season, courtesy of Pierre Gasly’s P7 finish at the Bahrain Grand Prix. Gasly also scored a point in Miami during the Sprint.
