TV show gets major licensing deal.
Popular Apple TV+ show Ted Lasso has signed a £500,000 deal with the Premier League which will give the show rights to use Premier League’s logos, team kits and even league trophies for the upcoming seasons.
It is reported that even though the Premier League bosses were initially sceptical, the show’s popularity, critical acclaim and charm made them decide otherwise. Given that Ted Lasso in Apple TV+’s top rated show in all of its international markets, the new deal will help the Premier League get internationally visibility, especially in the United States. The deal is also a first in breaking the ground between a sports competition and television show.
Ted Lasso follows the eponymous character who is hired by the fictional AFC Richmond’s recently divorced club owner to sabotage the team’s results to get revenge against her ex-husband. The show stars Jason Sudeikis in titular role who has won multiple accolades for his performance, including a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild Award and most recently, an Emmy.
Earlier in the summer, Sudeikis had vocally supported the English trio of Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka after the Euro 2020 final, where the youngsters faced racial abuse after missing their penalties against Italy.
Ted Lasso’s second season is currently airing on Apple TV+ every Friday. A third season is already on its way.
