Switzerland will take on Bosnia & Herzegovina in this all-European Group B clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, both knowing that a win here will put them in a very strong position to make it past the group and to the knockout stages, making this a high-stakes match.
For the game, here we present our preview and prediction.
Switzerland will be very miffed about their 1–1 draw against Qatar in their opening game, which they thoroughly dominated from start to finish, got the opening goal courtesy of a Breel Embolo penalty in the first half, only to then squander it right at the end when Miro Muheim inadvertently nodded the ball into his own net. The Swiss peppered the Qatari goal with 26 shots, but the one goal they managed from the penalty spot shows their profligacy and ruefulness in front of goal.
That said, they can look at the same performance and say that it was a win that was not meant to be, and that the same attacking impetus would have been enough to get them a comfortable win on any other day. They were the dominant side, kept the ball well, and constantly put Qatar under pressure. However, they cannot let profligacy get in their way once again if they are to make the knockouts.
Bosnia & Herzegovina, on the other hand, had the same result, but the manner of performance was a complete 180 compared to their opponents for this game. Against co-hosts Canada, the Zmajevi gave a good account of themselves and got a 1–1 draw, but they were the ones who squandered the lead.
BIH managed to execute their game plan rather well for 90% of the game. They weathered the early storm, during which Jonathan David missed a fairly easy chance to give Canada the lead. They then got the goal that they craved from a set piece by Jovo Lukic, dead balls having a massive strength of the side given their size advantage.
They then went about defending their lead, but as the game wore on, it felt that the approach was akin to playing with fire, given that they barely created anything of note from open play. And if veteran defender Sead Kolašinac’s goal-line clearance to keep their lead intact was not warning enough, the equaliser soon came in, and the spoils were shared.
Sergej Barbarez’s men will be hopeful that their captain and record goalscorer Edin Džeko returns to the side after missing the first game because he was not fully fit after recovering from an injury issue. As for Switzerland, while they do not have many injury concerns, they will hope that their attackers find their shooting boots.
It will once again be an attack-versus-defence style of game, with the Swiss doing all the attacking and Bosnia & Herzegovina happy to defend and soak up the pressure before hitting their opponents on the break. But maintaining their shape against a Swiss side who are a much better side than Canada may be a step too far for the valiant Bosnians. Hence, we believe that Switzerland are the favourites to win this match.
