Clay is often regarded as one of the most challenging surfaces in tennis. The red clay slows down the ball significantly compared to the hard and grass courts, making it more difficult for players to hit outright winners.

Additionally, the surface causes the ball to bounce higher, demanding greater physical effort and precise timing from players. Rallies tend to be longer on clay, requiring increased stamina, patience, and well-thought-out tactics to succeed. Mastery of this surface often separates the good from the great.

Here, we take a look at the top five clay-court tournaments played around the world.

5. Barcelona Open

The Barcelona Open is an ATP 500 annual tournament held at the Real Club de Tennis, Barcelona. It was founded in 1953 and held events in both the men’s and women’s categories until 1980. However, since then it has been an ATP tournament exclusively for professional men’s players in the singles and doubles categories. It’s popularly known as the “Trofeo Condo de Godó”.

Spain great Rafael Nadal has won a record 12 Barcelona Open singles titles with an unmatched win percentage of 93.1%. In the doubles category, Australia’s Roy Emerson has won seven titles alongside multiple partners.

The latest edition of the Barcelona Open was played out recently—between April 12 and 20. Holger Rune won the men’s singles title, while Luke Johnson and Sander Arends won the men’s doubles title.

4. Madrid Open

The Madrid Open is an ATP Masters 1000 tournament held in Madrid every year. Formerly known as the Madrid Masters, it is now called the Mutua Madrid Open due to a title-sponsorship agreement in place with Mutua Madrileña, Spain’s largest insurance company. Unlike the Barcelona Open, both men’s and women’s events are held at the Madrid Open.

The Madrid Open is played on the clay courts of the Caja Mágica at the Manzanares Park, San Fermín. It used to be played on blue courts until 2012.

Rafa Nadal has won a record five Madrid Open titles—the most in the men’s singles category. Petra Kvitová, meanwhile, has won a record three Madrid Open titles in women’s singles.

This year, the Madrid Open is being held from April 21 to May 4.

3. Monte-Carlo Masters

The Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters is another ATP Masters 1000 tournament played annually. Featuring men’s singles and doubles events, it’s held in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France, every April.

The event was founded in 1896 and was initially called the Monte-Carlo Internationals. It included both men’s and women’s events until 1982, when the latter was removed from the roster.

Nadal once again leads the men’s singles category here with a record 11 times, having won eight of those in consecutive editions. Meanwhile, Bob and Mike Bryan of the US have claimed the doubles title a record six times.

This year, the Monte-Carlo Masters was held from April 5 to 13. Carlos Alcaraz was the winner in the men’s singles category, while Romain Arneodo and Manuel Guinard won the men’s doubles title.

2. Italian Open

Popularly known as the Rome Masters, the Italian Open is also an ATP Masters 1000 tournament played on the clay courts of Foro Italico in the Italian capital. It is usually held in the second week of May.

Holding both men’s and women’s events, the Italian Open was founded in 1930 and has changed names multiple times over the years—including the Italian International Championships, the Rome Masters, and the Internazionali BNL d’Italia.

Yet again, Nadal holds the men’s singles record here with ten titles, while Chris Evert holds the record with in women’s singles with five titles.

This year, the Italian Open is scheduled to be held between May 7 and 18.

1. French Open

The French Open is the only Grand Slam played on clay. Also known as Roland-Garros, it’s organised by the French Tennis Federation at the Stade Roland Garros in Paris. Until 1975, it was the only major tournament not played on grass.

Due to the slow nature and high bounce of red clay, combined with the best-of-five-sets format, the French Open is widely regarded as the most physically demanding tournament in tennis. Generally held in late May, the tournament concludes of the clay court season that begins with other major ATP Masters 1000 and ATP 500 Tournaments.

Being a Grand Slam, the French Open features men’s and women’s tennis across both singles and doubles categories, including mixed doubles and several other events.

Rafael Nadal—surprise, surprise—is the most successful player at Roland-Garros with an unprecedented 14 titles. He is often referred to as the “King of Clay” for his absolute domination on the surface.

This year, the French Open is scheduled to be held from May 25 to June 8.
