With both teams vying for a place in the play-offs, the business end of the tournament should bring some high-octane action our way. Here is our Preview and Prediction for the game.
Women’s Premier League 2026 | Match 19: Gujarat Giants vs Mumbai Indians | 19:30 IST, 30 January 2026
The Gujarat Giants have turned around their form with two consecutive wins after three straight losses. Their last match was against the Delhi Capitals and yet again Sophie Devine denied the Delhi Capitals a win in the last over, helping her side win another close match. The Gujarat Giants top order hasn’t been consistent but their lower order has contributed crucial runs in matches. In this game, it was the late cameo from Tanuja Kanwar (21 not out off 11 balls) that swung the momentum GG’s way after Shree Charani had run through the Giants middle order, taking a fifer.
The Giants have been over-dependent on the opening pair of Beth Mooney and Sophie Devine to provide good starts and in games they have failed with the bat, GG have struggled to score competitive totals or chase big targets. The one promising talent in the Giants lineup is Indian batter Anushka Sharma who has looked superb every time she has come on to bat and has played some crucial innings so far.
Their captain Ashleigh Gardner has also been underwhelming with the ball, conceding far too many runs for her liking. However, veteran Rajeshwari Gaikwad has been the surprise package this tournament, grabbing vital breakthroughs while also remaining economical.
Their opponents in this game, the Mumbai Indians also produced an emphatic performance against RCB in their last game. It was imperative for MI to win that game to keep their hopes alive after three straight defeats. Nat-Sciver Brunt scored the WPL’s first-ever century (100 not out off 57 balls). However, MI couldn’t improve their net run-rate after having RCB in a spot of bother as Richa Ghosh (90 off 50 balls) plundered the MI bowlers late on and could even have led RCB to a famous win if she had found support from the other batters. Haley Matthews is slowly finding her form at the top of the order for MI and produced an all-round performance with a half-century and three wickets to cap off a superb performance. Though MI will have to watch out for complacency as their batting has also been over-reliant largely on Harmanpreet Kaur and Nat-Sciver Brunt this season. Amelia Kerr has been excellent with the ball throughout this WPL campaign but her failures with the bat have troubled the Mumbai Indians.
In the reverse fixture earlier this season, batting first Gujarat Giants scored a massive total of 192/5 for MI to chase but couldn’t defend it as MI captain Harmanpreet Kaur (71 not out off 43 balls) with support from Amanjot Kaur ( 40 off 26 balls) and Nicola Carey (38 off 23 balls) produced a masterful batting display to chase it down comfortably.
As both teams have now played a lot of games on this pitch, the familiarity with the conditions would be similar for both. MI would still hold the edge for me as they have a more balanced team and their key players have all regained form going into the business end of the tournament. Additionally, the Mumbai Indians also have a better bowling attack as compared to the Gujarat Giants. Hence, our pick for the winner in this game will be the Mumbai Indians.
Fantasy XI: Beth Mooney (wk), Hayley Matthews, Sophie Devine, Nat-Sciver Brunt, Harmanpreet Kaur (c), Amelia Kerr, Ashleigh Gardner, Amanjot Kaur, Rajeshwari Gaikwad, Shabnim Ismail, Renuka Singh Thakur.
