Match 55 of the 2026 Indian Premier League season brings us a crucial encounter in the top four race as a shaky Punjab Kings outfit welcome an out of sorts Delhi Capitals side at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala.
After starting the season with six consecutive victories, Shreyas Iyer’s team now finds itself in a slump, having lost three in a row – as they lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad by 33 runs in their last game. While the team still finds itself 3rd on the points table – at the time of writing this – a win for Chennai Super Kings on Sunday afternoon will mean three teams sit just one point behind PBKS who are 2nd on the points table – as a result they can’t afford to lose another game as the playoff race heats up. The bowling attack has let the team down in recent encounters, and Iyer expects a strong comeback from his players.
Despite recent failures, batting has been their strength so far this season. Prabhsimran Singh has made 364 runs at a strike rate of 172.51 and must deliver a strong start while Priyansh Arya has also scored 286 runs at a strike-rate of 242. Cooper Connolly’s unbeaten knock of 107 off 49 deliveries in the last game was electrifying, and the team needs similar efforts from him, along with Shreyas Iyer and Marcus Stoinis in the middle order. That said, they have firepower in the lower middle order, however, the likes of Suryansh Shedge, Shahank Singh, and Marco Jansen haven’t been able to contribute on a consistent basis.
The bowling attack also hasn’t stepped up in recent weeks. Arshdeep Singh is the leading wicket-taker with 11 wickets, but his economy rate of 10.42 is a concern. The team expects early wickets from him and Marco Jansen – however neither has done so effectively this season. Yuzvendra Chahal has also struggled with consistency and must do well in the middle overs with Lockie Ferguson. Besides, Vijaykumar Vyshak and Stoinis must do well in the death overs as the DC batters will target them.
As for their opponents – the Delhi Capitals had a meltdown with the bat in the last game against the Kolkata Knight Riders. The team lost the last game by 8 wickets after managing just 148 runs in their 20 overs. With 4 wins in 11 games, the team has dropped to 8th on the points table. Another loss will end their hopes of reaching the next round. Thus, Axar Patel would want to see a strong comeback from his players in this must-win game to secure a win and remain in the hunt for a finish in the Top 4.
In the batting department, KL Rahul is the third-highest run-getter this season with 486 runs and must deliver a good start with Pathum Nissanka. The middle order has struggled with single-digit scores in the last couple of matches, and the team needs runs from Nitish Rana, Sameer Rizvi, and Tristan Stubbs. The lower middle order also hasn’t fared well in the last game, and the team will look towards Axar Patel and Ashutosh Sharma to add quick runs.
The bowling attack has also leaked runs at more than 10 an over in the last five games. Mitchell Starc is the key bowler in the team and must make early inroads alongside Lungi Ngidi. The out-of-form Axar Patel and Vipraj Nigam must keep the scoring in check in the middle overs. That said, the biggest disappointment for the Capitals has to be Kuldeep Yadav’s lack of output. The left-arm chinaman has been going at an economy of 10.66 this season and has picked up just seven wickets in 10 games.
In terms of weather forecast and pitch report, we expect overcast skies and rain in Dharamshala. The wickets here at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala does offer something for fast bowlers. The ball moves here, and it can create doubts among the batsmen. However, stroke players have done well because the ground is smaller. Spinners must bowl tight lines, as the ball doesn’t turn here as much as on other tracks in the country.
That said, the side batting first has a clear advantage on this track. The team that batted first has won six times in the last seven games. As a result, the side winning the toss should look to bat first on this surface.
Looking ahead to this crucial top-4 race fixture, Delhi Capitals’ hopes for a playoff berth rest on the result of this game. They have struggled with the ball this season and need to execute their plans effectively on a track that will assist their bowlers. The Punjab Kings on the other hand will look to end their downward slide with a strong comeback. They have a formidable batting lineup and strong hitters. It will be a close game but we’re giving the Punjab Kings a slight edge here.
