Match 55 of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season brings us a crucial encounter in the top-four race as a shaky Punjab Kings (PBKS) outfit welcomes an out-of-sorts Delhi Capitals (DC) side at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala.

For the game, here we present our preview and predictions.

Indian Premier League 2026 | Match 55: Punjab Kings vs Delhi Capitals | 19:30 IST, 11 May 2026

After starting the season with six consecutive victories, Shreyas Iyer and Co. now find themselves in a slump, having lost three in a row, their latest defeat arriving against SunRisers Hyderabad by 33 runs.

While PBKS are still third on the points table at the time of writing, a win for the Chennai Super Kings on Sunday afternoon could make things even more interesting; the Kings cannot afford to lose another game. Bowling has let the team down in recent encounters, and Iyer will expect a strong comeback.

Despite recent failures, batting has been PBKS’s strength so far this season. Prabhsimran Singh has made 364 runs at a strike rate of 172.51, while Priyansh Arya has scored 286 runs at a strike rate of 242. Cooper Connolly’s unbeaten knock of 107 off 49 in the last game was electrifying, and the team will need similar efforts from him, with support from Shreyas Iyer and Marcus Stoinis in the middle order. They have firepower lower down the order as well, though the likes of Suryansh Shedge, Shashank Singh, and Marco Jansen haven’t been able to contribute on a consistent basis.

The Kings’ bowling attack also hasn’t stepped up in recent weeks. Arshdeep Singh is their leading wicket-taker with 11 wickets, but his economy rate of 10.42 is a concern. The management expects early wickets from him and Marco Jansen, but neither has done that effectively this season. Yuzvendra Chahal has also struggled with consistency and must do well in the middle overs alongside Lockie Ferguson. Besides, Vijaykumar Vyshak and Stoinis must do well in the death overs, as the DC batters will target them.

As for their opponents, the Capitals had a meltdown with the bat in the last game against the Kolkata Knight Riders. They lost the last game by eight wickets after managing just 148 runs in their 20 overs. With four wins in 11 games, they’ve dropped to eighth on the points table; another loss will end their hopes of reaching the next round. Thus, Axar Patel will want to see a strong comeback from his players in this must-win game to secure a win and remain in the hunt for a finish in the top four.

In the DC batting department, KL Rahul is the team’s third-highest run-getter this season with 486 runs and must deliver a good start alongside Pathum Nissanka. The middle order has struggled with single-digit scores in the last couple of matches, and the management needs to see runs from Nitish Rana, Sameer Rizvi, and Tristan Stubbs. The lower-middle order also hasn’t fared well in the last game, and the team will look towards Axar Patel and Ashutosh Sharma to add quick runs.

DC’s bowling attack has also leaked runs at more than ten an over in the last five games. Mitchell Starc is the key bowler in the team and must make early inroads alongside Lungi Ngidi. The out-of-form Axar Patel and Vipraj Nigam must keep the scoring in check in the middle overs. That said, the biggest disappointment for the Capitals has to be Kuldeep Yadav’s lack of output. The left-arm chinaman has been going at an economy of 10.66 this season and has picked up just seven wickets in ten outings.

In terms of the weather forecast and pitch report for this game, expect overcast skies and rain in Dharamshala. The wickets here at the HPCA Stadium do offer something to fast bowlers. The ball moves here, which can instil doubt among batters. However, stroke players fare well because the ground is relatively smaller. Spinners must bowl tight lines, as the ball doesn’t turn here as much as it does on other tracks in the country.

That said, the side batting first has a clear advantage on this track. The first-batting outfit has won six times in the last seven games. As a result, the side winning the toss will look to bat first on this surface.

Looking ahead to this crucial fixture, the Delhi Capitals’ hopes for a play-off berth rest on the result of this game. They’ve struggled with the ball this season and need to execute their plans effectively on a track that will assist their bowlers. The Punjab Kings, on the other hand, will look to end their downward slide with a strong comeback. They have a formidable batting line-up featuring strong hitters.

It will be a close game, but we’re giving the Kings a slight edge for the win here.
