Spain will be looking to put aside their disappointing opening-day performance against Cape Verde on the backburner as they look to get their World Cup campaign back on track with a potential banana-skin encounter against a fairly confident Saudi Arabia side in this Group H fixture of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Here is our Preview and Predictions for the game.
Spain could not have asked for a worst start to their tournament. Slumping to a goalless draw against Cape Verde was an embarrassing result for La Roja given the sheer disparity in quality between the two sides.
Spain did everything in their power to breach the Cap Verdean goal, but were thwarted at every stage by their goalkeeper. But apart from that too, it felt like their overall performance was a little too passive for the liking of the people. They dominated the position, but moved the ball too slowly, allowing Cape Verde time to get back into their shape defensively. Despite taking 23 shots, only 8 were on target, and quite a few of them were comparatively routine saves for the keeper.
Even the introduction of Lamine Yamal from the bench did not have the desired impact as he still makes his way to full fitness from injury. The frustration was rife from Spain players as they eventually ended with nothing to show for. Rodri’s comments on their opponent’s style of play did not win too many favours too as they sought to undermine the opposition rather than their own performance.
Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, will be buoyed by their performance against Uruguay, where they were very good value for a point in what eventually turned out to be a 1-1 draw where Saudi took the lead in the first half. They were good value for their lead, defended well for the majority of the game, but the pressure to hold on to the lead eventually told as they conceded in the late stages of the second half.
The performance from the side will undoubtedly have impressed new coach Georgios Donis, who was just recently appointed to replace Herve Renard at the hotseat. He will, however, want a little more adventure in attack against Spain because sitting back against them can be a much more daunting prospect.
Both sides enter this game with a genuine chance of making it to the next round. While Spain were dodgy, Saudi Arabia were spirited. It all depends on who is able to hold their nerve in the clutch.
While Saudi Arabia is known for their giant-killing spree, as evidenced by their victory against eventual champions Argentina in 2022, it feels highly unlikely that they will repeat the trick against Spain. Which is why we believe that Spain will be the favourites entering this game.
Score Prediction: Spain 3-0 Saudi Arabia
