Midfielders perform various roles in a team. Based on how far ahead you play on the pitch, they contribute in terms of goals, assists, breaking the lines, falling back to help the defence, etc. Following are my top ten midfielders in the Premier League so far this season.

Maddison | 8 | 4 | 8 |
Ward-Prowse | 7 | 4 | 7 |
Smith-Rowe | 9 | 2 | 3 |
Gallagher | 8 | 3 | 5 |

The Belgian midfielder has been at it during the 2021/22 season and is having quite a consistent season this time around. He plays nearly every game for Manchester City and his goal count for the season has just hit double figures. He also has three assists to his name.
De Bruyne has the ability to drive powerfully with the ball and make passes that nobody else on his side can. This season, he has scored some wonderful goals, including a peach against Chelsea from just outside the box. So far this season, he has over five shot-creating actions per game, which indicates his prowess in the final third.
Although much of Fernandes’ popular image has diminished after Cristiano Ronaldo’s arrival, the midfielder has played a vital role in pushing Manchester United to fight for a top-four spot this season. This season, Bruno has scored nine goals and has six assists to his name. He has created fourteen big chances, proving his worth to this Man United side. Bruno creates less than five shot-creating actions, which although less than De Bruyne’s, are still effective for an attacking midfielder. It must also be noted that Bruno is facing the brunt of issues at the club: managerial changes, different styles and tactics etc.
Probably the most consistent player for Chelsea this season, Mason Mount has been providing his team with that extra bit of edge over the rest in the race for the top four. Chelsea are not yet secure in terms of their top-four spot, and Mount will be critical to making sure they do.
Mount has scored on eight occasions and provided seven assists this season. He takes part in over four shot-creating actions per game, an incredibly good state considering that Chelsea play with a back five, which ensures that the wingbacks do most of the work. Mount also has a total of eight big chances created this season, a fitting player to take the third spot on this list.
James Maddison is having a good season, although Leicester City are having trouble fighting for a European spot. Maddison is yet another No. 10 who picks up clever pockets and can find a teammate with very little time on the ball. He is quite deadly from range as well.
Maddison has registered eight goals and four assists thus far in the Premier League. Brendon Rogers likes playing expansive football and throwing his players forward. This could be one of the reasons for Maddison’s four-plus shot-creating actions per ninety minutes. He also has a total of eight big chances created, putting him just a few places off the top.
Probably the most underrated and overlooked midfielder in the Premier League, James Ward-Prowse is simply not given enough credit for his contributions to the game. An extremely technically-gifted player and brilliant from set-pieces, Ward-Prowse is an asset to any side. He has seven goals and four assists this season. He is not a typical No. 10 and barely gets into the box of the opposition, while also averaging less than a touch in the opposition penalty area per game, yet his numbers tell a different story. He has created seven big chances and is involved in over three shot-creating chances per game.
Emile Smith Rowe and Bukayo Saka have undoubtedly been two of Arsenal’s best academy players in the last couple of years. Although he does not start as much anymore, Smith Rowe is one of the highest goalscorers for Arsenal in the league this season with a total of nine goals.
Smith Rowe has, in recent times, played from the left-hand side as compared to the No. 10 position that many expect him to play in. Because of this shift, he has nearly three shot-creating actions per ninety minutes and has just the three big chances created. He also has two assists to his name this season.
Next up is Conor Gallagher, who is more of a box-to-box midfielder than a typical No. 10. He is having the season of his life at Crystal Palace. The Englishman has netted on eight occasions and provided three assists so far this season. It is quite astonishing to see someone who plays as a No. 8 pop up inside the opposition box as often as Gallagher does. He averages nearly three touches per game inside the opposition’s penalty box. His midfield attributes are also on the fore; Gallagher takes part in nearly three shot-creating actions per game.
The little Portuguese was everyone’s fantasy pick at one point in the season, when it just did not seem like Bernardo Silva wouldn’t not have any goal involvement. However, off late, he has not been at his shining best. He still makes this list as a result of his excellent work during the beginning of the campaign, however.
Silva has seven goals and two assists to his name so far this season. With Riyad Mahrez playing brilliantly on the wing and Kevin De Bruyne doing his job in midfield, Silva has been pushed a little further behind than he would like. He still takes part in over three shot-creating actions per game and has created six big chances this season.
Paul Pogba finds himself in ninth place. The Frenchman is probably the most debated player in the Premier League. He has not made the number of appearances that most others on this list have made, having played just seventeen games this season. He has one goal and nine assists so far this season. However, as a midfielder who is generally box-to-box and not a typical No. 10, Pogba still provides more than three shot-creating actions per game. The ability of the man to make things happen given all these factors is wonderful.
The final player on this list is Jacob Ramsey, who has been immense for Aston Villa this season. He is now one of the first names on the team sheet for his side. The Villa midfield looks assured with Philippe Coutinho, Emiliano Buendía, and Jacob Ramsey, who makes bursting runs into the box, affecting Villa’s play primarily in an attacking sense.
Ramsey averages over two touches in the opposition penalty area, which is a fairly good stat considering he has two proper No. 10’s ahead of him. He has six goals and one assist so far this season.
Ramsey has had an impressive breakthrough season and will look to improve on his stats in the upcoming season.
