Tottenham and Sky come together for #GameZero

Premier League side will host the world’s first net zero carbon football game.

Tottenham Hotspur‘s home game against Chelsea on September 19 will be a special and unique one as the club will partner with Sky to make that game the first net zero carbon football game at the highest level.

The fixture will be supported by COP26 and the Premier League and is named as #GameZero. Net zero carbon means that all the direct emissions will be reduced as much as possible with the remaining being offset through natural projects which will be removing emissions from the atmosphere.

Sky, who is the Principal and Media Partner for the United Nation’s Climate Change Conference (COP26) this year, has already committed to being net zero carbon by 2030. The game will showcase the ‘green’ steps that the fans and the sporting world will take towards making the future zero-carbon.

Sky and Spurs will work together to minimise emissions from matchday activities such as the energy used to power the game, travel to and from the stadium for the club and fans and also work on the dietary options at the stadium to make sure #GameZero is a success.

To make the aforementioned points happen, both parties will be – promoting public transport usage for all fans, cycle to the stadium, opting for plant-based food options, and recycling waste amongst other methods.

Jonathan Licht, Managing Director of Sky Sports, said, “We’re proud to be working with COP26 and Tottenham Hotspur to make #GameZero the world’s first net zero carbon football match at the elite level. We hope that by using the power of sport, we can inspire and support football fans to make simple changes to reduce their carbon footprint and make more climate-friendly choices.”

COP26 President-Designate, Alok Sharma, also weighed in with his views, stating, “Climate change affects every aspect of our lives, including the sports that we love to watch and play. We can all take steps to help protect the planet for future generations, including in major sporting events. That is why I am delighted COP26 is working with Sky, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and the Premier League to show how football is going One Step Greener by hosting the world’s first major net zero football match.”

Spurs’ chairman, Daniel Levy, spoke about how Spurs are looking to bring about a change with #GameZero: “We are delighted to be the chosen partner of Sky on this ground-breaking initiative that will demonstrate the role our game can play in addressing the urgent issue of climate change. As the Premier League’s greenest club, Tottenham Hotspur is passionate about our planet – we look forward to showcasing our wide range of sustainable measures that are already in place and encouraging our fans to take simple actions that can make a huge difference.”
