West Indies vs South Africa 2nd T20 || South Africa tour of West Indies 2024 || 00:30 IST, August 26, 2024
Shamar Joseph and Matthew Forde had the Proteas reeling at 42/5 early on with the seamers putting the visitors in all sorts of trouble before Tristan Stubbs’ 76 along with a handy knock from Patrick Kruger bailed South Africa and helped them reach a respectable 174/7.
Alick Athanaze, Shai Hope and Nicholas Pooran made sure South Africa had no chance with the ball as the hosts raced away to a comfortable 7-wicket win thanks to an 84-run opening partnership between Hope and Athanaze.
For the Proteas, apart from Stubbs and Kruger’s partnership, there was nothing positive to take from the opening game and they know that their batters need to step up with the experienced likes of Reeza Hendricks, Aiden Markram and Rassie van der Dussen all having a poor outing. The visitors need to make sure to not lose too many wickets in the powerplay with Reeza Hendricks, who is having a tough run in the past few games coming under the spotlight.
From the bowling perspective, the South African bowlers were taken apart early on by Athanaze and Hope before Pooran’s onslaught killed the game.Ottneil Baartman was the pick of the bowlers with 2/30 from his 4 overs while debutant Kwena Maphaka, who came in at the 11th hour for the injured Lungi Ngidi, had a decent outing as well.
The hosts, high on confidence from a big win, are the favourites to lock in the series and having utilised the conditions better, West Indies are the favourites for the second T20 and expect the hosts to close out the series.
