As the grass court season gets underway, tennis fans around the world eagerly anticipate the crown jewel of the sport — Wimbledon, often regarded as the king of Grand Slams. It’s the tournament all players dream of winning, where history comes alive on the iconic lawns of the All England Club.
Grass courts present a unique challenge. Faster than clay but generally slower than hard courts, grass demands a versatile skill set. Success here isn’t just about powerful baseline rallies, but also sharp reflexes, precise footwork, and a strong net game. The surface rewards players who can adapt quickly, making for thrilling and unpredictable match-ups.
Last year, Carlos Alcaraz defeated Novak Djokovic in the men’s singles final in straight sets — 6–2, 6–2, 7–6 — in a fairly one-sided encounter.
Here, we take a look at the top contenders for the men’s singles title at Wimbledon 2025.
The defending Wimbledon champion is looking in great form to retain his title this year. Alcaraz will go into Wimbledon having won the French Open — he came back from two sets down and saved three championship points before defeating world No. 1 Jannik Sinner in a marathon five-setter.
The 21-year-old is one of the fastest players on the court. His exceptional agility, all-round game, and ability to generate pace from his racquet make him one of the most dangerous opponents on any surface.
The current world No. 2 has a superb all-round game coupled with a never-say-die attitude that makes him difficult to beat. However, he needs to be wary of complacency and errors, which can creep into his game from time to time. Having won back-to-back titles here, the young Spaniard is once again the favourite to lift the trophy.
The current world No. 1 has been in sublime form since last year. His Grand Slam record has been exceptional this year, with him having defended his Australian Open title and reached the French Open final, where he was on course to beat Alcaraz in four sets before the Spaniard came back and claimed the title in a fifth-set tie-break.
Sinner is one of the best players in the world right now, thanks to his relentless consistency from the back of the court. His groundstrokes are hit with absolute venom, while he is equally adept at net play. Though his service has improved a lot, a low percentage of first serves could be a concern for him.
Sinner’s best performance at Wimbledon came in 2023, where he lost to Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals. However, being one of the most improved players, and with remarkable consistency in Grand Slams, Sinner is a strong contender for his first Wimbledon singles title.
Novak Djokovic is a name that needs no introduction. The 24-time Grand Slam champion is unsurprisingly a strong contender once again for the Wimbledon crown this year.
Even at his age and with his injury issues, Djokovic remains a formidable opponent because of his indomitable will. He may not have been performing well in ATP tournaments of late, but when it comes to the Grand Slams, he always manages to bring out his best.
Djokovic knows what it takes to win Wimbledon, having already lifted the trophy eight times. He has been a finalist in the last two years, losing out to Carlos Alcaraz on both occasions.
Even though it has become more difficult for him to compete with the likes of Alcaraz and Sinner, Djokovic still possesses the skill and mental resolve needed to beat anyone on his day. If he can stay fit and bring his A game, there’s every chance he could secure a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title at the Championships.
Even in his earlier days as a pro, Alexander Zverev was widely considered someone who would become a Grand Slam winner at least once.
Though he hasn’t won any Grand Slams yet, Zverev has come close on three occasions: the 2020 US Open final, where he lost to Dominic Thiem in five sets; the 2024 French Open final, where he lost to Carlos Alcaraz in a five-set thriller; and the recent Australian Open, where he lost to Jannik Sinner in straight sets.
The 28-year-old is comfortable playing on any surface. He has one of the best serves in the game and is adept at playing both from the baseline and at the net.
Looking at his form prior to Wimbledon, Zverev reached the quarter-finals of the French Open, where he lost to Novak Djokovic, and lost in the final to Taylor Fritz at the BOSS Open in Stuttgart. However, he has done well at Wimbledon in the past few years, and if he can compete with the very best, this could be the year he finally wins his first Grand Slam title.
Jack Draper has been in top form this year, which has taken him to a career-best ATP ranking of world No. 4 this month. The Englishman also won a Masters 1000 title at Indian Wells earlier this year.
Though Draper hasn’t performed particularly well at Wimbledon in recent years, the 23-year-old has made massive improvements to his game and looks set to surprise many at the Championships.
Grass isn’t really his favourite surface, but Draper is an aggressive player with an all-round game — featuring a fast serve, powerful groundstrokes, and decent net play.
Another positive for Draper will be the home support at Wimbledon, which could propel him to a surprise men’s singles title win.
Daniil Medvedev hasn’t had a particularly good season so far. The tall Russian has dropped down the rankings and hasn’t performed well at Grand Slams or ATP events this year.
However, Medvedev remains a big-game player and can beat anyone on his day. The lanky Russian has fierce baseline play, a booming serve, and a unique approach at the net, which has proven to be rather effective.
The former Grand Slam champion has had a strong record at Wimbledon in recent years. He reached the semi-finals in both 2022 and 2023. His lack of form is a concern going into this massive tournament, especially as he couldn’t get past the first round at the French Open — though clay has never been his favourite surface, so it’s understandable.
Medvedev did reach the Stuttgart Open final recently, where he lost to Taylor Fritz. He is looking better on grass. If he can build on that and improve his form, one cannot write him off as a serious contender.
Taylor Fritz is another player who likes the grass and hard courts but struggles on clay. His game is tailor-made for the hard courts — fast, booming serves and fierce groundstrokes with not-so-good net play.
The 27-year-old has reached the quarter-finals a couple of times at Wimbledon and will look to go further this time around. Fritz might have gained a lot of confidence from winning the recently concluded BOSS Open in Stuttgart, which is an ATP event played on grass.
The American No. 1 reached his first Grand Slam final at the US Open last year, losing to Jannik Sinner. If he reaches the final here, he will hope to cross the line this time around.
Tommy Paul is another possible contender for the Wimbledon men’s singles title. He made it to the quarter-finals here last year, where he was beaten by eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz.
Paul has been a very consistent performer at Grand Slams in recent years. The 28-year-old has an all-round game with great baseline play and a good serve, while also being a skilled net player. This ability, along with his speed and agility, makes him a tough opponent on all surfaces. It’s also the reason he has done well on hard, grass, and clay courts in recent years.
Paul has the ability and the game to beat top players; it’s just his mentality and belief that need some work. If he is able to handle the pressure against the very best, he has a great chance to go deep in the tournament — and even end up as a surprise winner.
