Wimbledon 2025: Top women’s singles contenders

As the grass court season gets underway, tennis fans around the world eagerly anticipate the crown jewel of the sport — Wimbledon, often regarded as the king of Grand Slams. It’s the tournament all players dream of winning, where history comes alive on the iconic lawns of the All England Club.

Grass courts present a unique challenge. Faster than clay but generally slower than hard courts, grass courts demand a versatile skill set. Success here isn’t just about powerful baseline rallies, but also sharp reflexes, precise footwork, and a strong net game. The surface rewards players who can adapt quickly, making for thrilling and unpredictable match-ups.

Last year, Barbora Krejcíková won the women’s singles title, defeating Jasmine Paolini in the final in three sets 6–2, 2–6, 6–4.

Here, we take a look at the top contenders for the women’s singles title at Wimbledon 2025.

Aryna Sabalenka

The current world No. 1 has had a great year in terms of her Grand Slam performances, reaching the finals of both the Australian Open and the French Open. However, the Belarusian has suffered heartbreak as well, losing both finals to American opponents. And yet, Sabalenka remains the favourite to win her first Wimbledon title this year.

Sabalenka is comfortable playing on all surfaces. She dominates rallies with her strength and power, and her net play has improved as well. Her only weakness is her overall one-dimensional game; when that doesn’t work, she doesn’t seem to have a plan B.

At the Championships, Sabalenka will also want to shrug off the disappointment of the recently concluded French Open, where she won the first set in the final and looked on course to win, before too many unforced errors — and a better game from Coco Gauff — made it difficult for her, and she eventually lost in three sets.

That said, Sabalenka has the mental fortitude to forget those two final losses and remains the prime contender for the Wimbledon women’s singles title this year.

Madison Keys

Madison Keys always had a lot of talent, but she never really managed to prove her credentials. That changed at the Australian Open this year, however, when she beat big players en route to the final and then claimed the title by beating the two-time defending champion, Aryna Sabalenka.

Keys is a strong player with a great serve and dictates points from the baseline with fierce groundstrokes. However, she isn’t particularly adept at net play, though her recent performances at Wimbledon will give her a lot of confidence. She reached the quarter-finals here last year, where she lost to Sabalenka.

The 30-year-old has the potential to beat any player on her day. Having won her first Grand Slam title this year, and given her affinity for grass, she will go into this tournament as one of the favourites.

Elena Rybakina

Wimbledon winner in 2022, Elena Rybakina had an illness- and injury-ridden season last year. Grass remains her favourite surface, however, and she loves to play at the All England Club.

Last season, Rybakina reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon, where she lost in three sets to eventual winner Barbora Krejcíková. Rybakina is one of the calmest players on the women’s tour with an effortless style of play. She has the best serve on tour and likes to play attacking tennis from the baseline. She is also good with volleys and drop shots, which makes her a good player on grass.

Rybakina hasn’t quite lived up to her billing, as she has the talent to win big titles but has lost her way recently. Still, the 26-year-old remains a strong contender for the Wimbledon title due to her great affinity to the surface and the fact that she knows how to win the title here, having already done it once.

Coco Gauff

The recently crowned French Open champion is another contender for the singles title at Wimbledon.

Though grass hasn’t been her most favoured surface, Gauff now has to show that she is ready to make that step up and play well on all courts. The 21-year-old hasn’t fared too badly on grass, having reached the Round of 16 here last year. She prefers to play from the baseline and has a great backhand. She is fast and agile, and has a great serve too. However, her relatively weak forehand is something she needs to work on, as it is constantly targeted by her opponents.

Gauff is a formidable opponent. With the confidence of winning another Grand Slam title, she can go deep in the tournament and is in with a shout of going all the way as well.

Mirra Andreeva

Mirra Andreeva announced herself to the world at Wimbledon two years ago, when she reached the Round of 16 at just 16 years of age. She has certainly gone from strength to strength since then and become a much-improved player.

Andreeva has already won two WTA Masters titles this year, defeating many top-ranked players en route to those titles. In addition, she likes to play on grass and has the complete game to challenge any opponent. With her improved play, the now 18-year-old has also learned to keep calm under pressure and come back from tough situations to win matches.

Having climbed the rankings and performed well at previous Grand Slams, Andreeva remains a favourite to go deep in this tournament — and even go on to win her first Grand Slam title.

Iga Swiatek

Former world No. 1 Iga Swiatek is yet another contender for the Wimbledon crown.

Swiatek has fallen down the rankings since last year, having not won any majors since the Roland-Garros singles title last year. She has not fared well in WTA events either.

However, the several-time Grand Slam–winning Pole can’t be underestimated. Though grass isn’t really her favourite surface, Swiatek is a consistent player when it comes to Grand Slams. She reached the semi-finals of both the Australian Open and Roland-Garros this year, and there is no reason to believe that she can’t go far at Wimbledon.

If Swiatek can regain some of the confidence that saw her reach the world No. 1 ranking a few years ago, she is definitely a threat to anyone on the tour. If she can go deep in this tournament, there is a good chance she goes on to lift the Wimbledon trophy this year.

Jessica Pegula

Jessica Pegula is another player who has performed consistently on the WTA Tour. Having reached her first Grand Slam final at the US Open last year, Pegula is another contender for the Wimbledon singles title this year.

Pegula’s best performance at Wimbledon is a quarter-final appearance in 2023, where she lost to eventual winner Markéta Vondroušová in three sets. This year, she lost here in the second round.

That said, the 31-year-old has risen through the ranks since then and is currently ranked third in the world. She has a style of play that is aggressive from the baseline, with powerful groundstrokes. In addition, she is very strong mentally and stays calm under pressure.

Pegula certainly has what it takes to win a Grand Slam — and she is definitely getting closer. We give her an outside chance to win the Wimbledon singles title this time.

Emma Navarro

Emma Navarro is another American talent who announced herself to the world with consistent performances last season and could end up as a surprise winner at the All England Club this year.

Wimbledon has been especially good for the 24-year-old, as she defeated Coco Gauff here last year and reached the quarter-finals. She also reached the US Open semi-finals last year and the Australian Open quarter-finals earlier this year. Her consistency in Grand Slams over the last year has been particularly impressive.

Navarro’s playing style is similar to most American players, who like to play aggressively from the baseline with fierce groundstrokes. She has a powerful forehand and an equally good backhand. She is also very agile and has great court coverage. With her excellent footwork, she likes to dictate play from the back, and her net play is strong as well — which works well on grass.

Navarro has an all-round game and can beat any top-ranked player on her day. This year, she has made massive strides and could go all the way and end up as a Grand Slam winner.
