Ashleigh Barty Season Overview 2020

Ashleigh Barty has been at the top of the tennis world at the moment and is showing no signs of coming down. The world number 1 in the WTA rankings has consistently been giving good performances. After the 2019 French Open triumph, she will be looking forward to winning some more Grand Slams to her name and become one of the best female tennis players in the history. Let us have a look at an overview of her 2020 season.

Brisbane International – Barty started her season by participating in her hometown tournament called Brisbane International. She was considered a favourite to win the competition but unfortunately got defeated by Jennifer Brady in the Second Round itself.

Adelaide International – After a disappointing start to her pre-season, she participated in the Adelaide International tournament a week later where she showed the world her sporting capabilities and got her hands on her first title on home soil after beating Dayana Yastremska.

Australian Open – Ashleigh was the first Australian woman to take part in the Australian Open while she was ranked world number 1 and was considered as the favourite again to lift the title this year. She had a good run in this tournament but eventually lost to Sofia Kenin who later became champion as well. She also picked up her first top ten wins in a major tournament (Petra Kvitová).

Qatar Open – After taking some time off, Barty returned to make her debut appearance in the Qatar Open which was the first Premier 5 tournament of the year. She was again unable to go past the semi-final stage as she was beaten by Kvitová in the semis.

Ashleigh Barty did not participate in any further tournaments as the Indian Wells was cancelled due to the pandemic and all other tournaments were postponed till any further notice. After the restart, Barty decided to skip the tournaments due to travelling concerns amidst this Corona Virus situation. She still managed to hold on to her World number 1 ranking due to some change in rules by the WTA.
