ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024: Day 12 Review

Day 12 of the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup saw three games played: the first between the West Indies and New Zealand, then we moved to the Netherlands’ clash with Bangladesh, before wrapping up the day with England’s contest against Oman.

Men’s T20 WC 2024: West Indies v New Zealand

In what is certainly a shock result, the West Indies managed to beat the Kiwis by 13 runs, which means that New Zealand are out of the tournament after playing just two group matches.

During the contest, the co-hosts batted first and put on a challenging total thanks to Sherfane Rutherford’s brilliant 68 runs off 39 deliveries. Trent Boult was the pick of the bowlers for the Kiwis as he snapped up three wickets for just 16 runs in four overs.

However, in reply, New Zealand could never get going in the run chase and consistently lost wickets throughout the innings. The best bit of batting came from Glenn Phillips, who scored 40 off 33 balls, but this knock came at a time when the asking rate had shot up a bit too far.

First innings: West Indies 149/9 in 20 overs
Second innings: New Zealand 136/9 in 20 overs

Men’s T20 WC 2024: Bangladesh v Netherlands

For a neutral, the day threw up some exciting encounters, and this Bangladeshi win was extremely entertaining. They put on an impressive 159 runs after experienced all-rounder Shakib Al Hassan came to the party, scoring 64 runs in 46 deliveries. It was the finishing that earned the Asian country a competitive total, and another old-timer, Mahmudullah, had a part to play with his 25 off 21.

Although the Netherlands looked in control of the chase, needing less than nine an over with ten overs remaining, they failed to cross the line. It was some canny spin bowling from Shakib and Rishad Hossain in the final ten overs that suffocated the Dutch batting order. Sybrand Engelbrecht was the major threat in this innings for the Netherlands, as he made 33 off 22 balls.

With this result, Bangladesh are placed second in Group D with four points and are favourites to go through along with South Africa.

First innings: Bangladesh 159/5 in 20 overs
Second innings: Netherlands 134/8 in 20 overs

Men’s T20 WC 2024: England v Oman

The final game of the day kept England in the hunt for a Super Eight spot with Scotland. They bowled out Oman for a meagre 47 runs, with Adil Rashid picking up four wickets for 11 runs.

The English batters didn’t break a sweat in chasing down this total and finished the match in just 3.1 overs. Jos Buttler and Co now have a better net run rate better than that of Scotland, but but are still two points short of their neighbours.

First innings: Oman 47/10 in 13.2 overs
Second innings: England 50/2 in 3.1 overs
