IPL 2026: Lucknow Super Giants SWOT Analysis

After qualifying for the play-offs in their first two years, the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) finished seventh last season despite leadership and support staff changes.

Ahead of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, the franchise made bold decisions at the mini-auction, revamping their squad while again making changes to the coaching setup.

Here, we present our SWOT analysis for the Lucknow Super Giants ahead of the 2026 IPL season.

Strength

LSG’s biggest strength this season is their explosive top four batters and the quality assortment of Indian pacers at their disposal. Last season, the top three of Mitchell Marsh, Aiden Markram, and Nicholas Pooran did the bulk of the damage. Marsh scored 627 runs, while both Markram (445 runs) and Pooran (524 runs) had their best-ever IPL campaign.

Rishabh Pant, despite enduring one of his worst IPL campaigns, ended the season with a magnificent 118* against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the final league fixture, reminding everyone of his destructive potential. Moreover, the addition of Sri Lankan all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga will add further batting depth lower down the order.

Apart from their top four, the Super Giants arguably have the best assortment of Indian pacers in the tournament. The trade deal to bring in a hungry Mohammed Shami can prove to be a masterstroke if the veteran pacer manages to stay fit for the entire season, while the likes of Mayank Yadav, Avesh Khan, and Mohsin Khan make up the rest of the seam attack.

With the likes of Prince Yadav, Akash Singh, and Naman Tiwari as back-ups to these four, the LSG pace battery looks well covered on paper. Besides, if Shami turns the clock back and brings his red-hot domestic form to the IPL, a lot of LSG’s Powerplay concerns will be taken care of.

Weakness

Despite improvements, LSG still lack an experienced finisher. Releasing David Miller has left a gap in the death overs. Josh Inglis is not a natural finisher and will miss part of the season, which makes the INR 8.6-crore investment in him even more puzzling.

Last season, both Ayush Badoni and Abdul Samad were entrusted with the finishing duties. To an extent, they did a commendable job, but there were also instances where the team collapsed following explosive starts after their middle-order batters failed to capitalise during the last five to six overs.

Although the team brought in some fresh faces ahead of the new season, many of them are injury-prone, including both Anrich Nortje and Mohammed Shami. This becomes a bigger concern simply due to the fact that Pant, Marsh, and Mayank Yadav have all had injury issues in recent years.

Last season, injuries derailed LSG’s campaign, and it won’t come as a surprise if a similar pattern repeats this time around.

Opportunity

IPL 2026 will present an opportunity for the franchise to bounce back after two poor seasons. With Rishabh Pant entering his second season as skipper and a new coaching setup, LSG can finally do wonders that they are highly capable of. Young Indian players such as Ayush Badoni, Akshat Raghuwanshi, Mukul Choudhary, and Naman Tiwari have a chance to step up.

Moreover, young bowlers like Digvesh Rathi, Mayank Yadav, and Prince Yadav will have a point to prove. On fast pitches, LSG can field one of the most threatening pace attacks in the league. Besides, the 2026 season will be a great opportunity for Pant to grow into a more mature leader under the guidance of senior advisors like Kane Williamson and Tom Moody.

Threat

The biggest threat to LSG’s chances this season is injuries. While they have put together a quality team, almost half their squad is prone to injuries. Moreover, the last two seasons have been a lesson on how strong squads don’t always guarantee results.

Besides, the likes of Mohsin Khan and Avesh Khan have not played any competitive cricket in over a year, while the likes of Mayank Yadav, Anrich Nortje, and Mohammed Shami have shown recurring injury concerns.

Apart from injuries and their seamers, spin is one area where the Super Giants look terribly short of quality options. They bought Wanindu Hasaranga in the mini-auction, but the Sri Lankan tore his hamstring during the recently concluded T20 World Cup and is, therefore, a concern going into the new season.

Besides Hasaranga, LSG only have Digvesh Rathi and Shahbaz Ahmed as their other spin options, although Rathi has struggled for form in the domestic circuit since IPL 2025, while Ahmed was sparsely used by Pant and the LSG management last season.

Although expectations are high after heavy investment and staff changes, given the current state of the squad and the number of questions surrounding several key players, we predict LSG to endure a long and painful season near the foot of the table.

Probable XI/XII: Aiden Markram, Mitchell Marsh, Rishabh Pant, Nicholas Pooran, Ayush Badoni, Abdul Samad, Shahbaz Ahmed, Digvesh Rathi, Mohammed Shami, Anrich Nortje, Mayank Yadav, Prince Yadav/Avesh Khan (Impact Sub)

Prediction: 10th
