Kylian Mbappe times his Ballon d'or credentials to perfection after masterful performance against Inter Milan No sooner did the list of nominees for the Ballon d’or was revealed than Kylian Mbappe gave a huge statement in his quest to win the accolade with an all-round performance against Inter Milan in Real Madrid’s opening game of this Champions League season at the Bernabeu after it was confirmed that he is among the 30-man shortlist of nominees for the award. It has been a record-breaking year for Mbappe on an individual level. After a 10-goal 2026 FIFA World Cup, he not only won the Golden Boot, but also is now the outright highest-ever goalgetter in World Cup history, overtaking Lionel Messi, who has now retired from International Football. He was the leading goalscorer in last season’s Champions League, and also the leading scorer in the La Liga. Altogether, Mbappe scored 42 times in 44 appearances last season for Los Blancos, along with his double-digit haul at the World Cup. While he did come up empty-handed in the sense that he finished trophyless last season while finishing 4th with France in the World Cup, those numbers are hard to ignore given the context put behind them. He also started this season the same way as last, helping himself to 4 goals in his first 3 games, but was brought to a screeching halt in their defeat against Real Betis. Mbappe himself missed a stoppage-time penalty to salvage a point for his side. However, he dusted himself off quickly and continues to do what he does best- lead by example and show his worth by means of performances and goals. Against Inter, he got on the scoresheet as early as the 14th minute after ruthlessly capitalising on a Yann Bisseck error to give his side the lead. He could have easily had a brace by half-time, but his sumptuous 50-yard run and dribble that sat down two Inter defenders was well-saved by Inter keeper Josep Martinez. Apart from the goals, Mbappe also had a good all-round performance, which was very instrumental in keeping Inter at arm’s length despite them getting a late goal to keep things testy and uncomfortable towards the end. Even apart from his performances, Mbappe was very vocal about advocating himself for the Ballon d’or. In the pre-game conference on Monday, he did not play down his chances of winning the prize. He also reminded the journalists present that he is currently the record-holder for the most World Cup goals, and that definitely counts for something while also holding his own about his lack of pressing intensity and defensive duties in what was a gentle push back from him. With the nominations comparatively strong this time around, Mbappe has placed himself right in the mix with not only his vocal stance on the matter, but also with his performances on the field, which is the ultimate currency. And with his impactful and match-sealing performance against Inter, he has timed his Ballon D’or credentials to perfection. Kylian Mbappe times his Ballon d'or credentials to perfection

UEFA Champions League 2026/27: Matchday 1 Preview and Predictions Europe’s Premier competition is arriving this week with top European clubs set to lock horns to achieve continental glory. French club Paris Saint-Germain defeated English club Arsenal in the final last season to successfully defend their title. It’s going to be another exciting journey that could see an existing or new winner crowned the Champions of Europe. There are a couple of debutants this season as well with Azerbaijani club Sabah FK, Italian club Como, Austrian Club LASK and Norwegian club Viking joining the league phase of the expanded 36 team-format. Without a doubt this is going to be another spectacular ride to the Champions League final next year. So, without further ado, let’s look at all the preview and predictions from UCL Matchday 1 for the 2026/27 season – Club Brugge KV vs Aston Villa The Belgian champions will face-off with the Europa League winners in their first Champions League game this season. Both clubs have had contrasting fortunes in the league so far. While Brugge has won four and lost only one league game so far, the Villans are sitting at the bottom of the Premier League table with two losses out of two so far. Brugge has only one injury with defender Joel Ordóñez doubtful with a foot injury while Aston Villa could be without Amadou Onana, Johan Manzambi and Brian Madjo for this game. Club Brugge performed well at home in the 2025/26 Champions League, having lost only one game at home in the competition. Although Aston Villa defeated them in the competition the last two times they met, it won’t be an easy task for a transitional and struggling Villa team to get the better of them. We believe Brugge will win this one and start their campaign with a win. Score Prediction: Club Brugge 2-1 Aston Villa AEK Athens vs LASK Linz AEK Athens go into their opening UCL fixture having won their last league game on a canter. Athens has scored 13 goals in their last three home games without conceding a goal. As for their Austrian opponents, they are not doing too badly themselves. LASK Linz is sitting at the top of the Austrian Bundesliga table with five wins out of five and having scored 15 goals so far while conceding only two. From an injury perspective both teams have been rather fortunate as Athens has all players available and LASK could only miss Ramiz Harakate who is out with a knee injury. Both these teams are facing each other for the first time ever and therefore it could be a tricky match-up with neither team knowing what to expect. However, Athens has a good record at home and have been part of the competition multiple times while LASK is making their debut in the competition. We believe Athens will win this one comfortably. Score Prediction: AEK Athens 3-1 LASK Porto vs Manchester City Porto is back in the Champions League after a two-season hiatus and will open their UCL league phase with a game against English giants Manchester City. Although City haven’t looked their usual dominant best, they have found ways to win the game with Rayan Cherki and Erling Haaland making the impact so far. As for the hosts, Porto have been in top form in Liga Portugal unbeaten in five games out of five. Coming to the injury issues, Porto could miss Zaidu Sanusi, Oscar Pietuszewski and Vasco Sousa for this game. Man City could be without Nico O’Reilly and Jérémy Doku for this away trip to Estádio do Dragão. Porto and Man City have met four times before but haven’t beaten them even once with City bagging three wins and a draw. It won’t be an easy game for the CItyzens as Porto has some really exciting players that can trouble the City defence. We believe this could be a cagey encounter that City will win by a narrow margin. Score Prediction: Porto 1-2 Man City Real Madrid vs Internazionale Milano Real Madrid will go into this game on the back of an away defeat against Real Betis in LaLiga while their Italian opponents will go into this game unbeaten and full of confidence with three wins out of three. Having come back from a 2-0 deficit against Napoli to win 3-2 in their Italian Serie A fixture, the Nerazzurri fans would be buzzing. From an injury viewpoint, Los Blancos could miss a host of players with Aurélien Tchouaméni, Endrick, Thiago Pitarch, Raúl Asensio, Éder Militao and Rodrygo. As for Inter they have almost everyone fit with Djed Spence a doubt although he too is back in training. Real Madrid has a new manager in the experienced José Mourinho and have performed well at home under him so far. Inter hasn’t yet won a game against them in the Champions League and we feel the trend might continue as Madrid does have defensive issues but their front line and midfield are exceptional. With Inter also shipping goals left, right and centre, we feel the hosts will take the three points from this game. Score Prediction: Real Madrid 3-1 Inter Milan Borussia Dortmund vs Villarreal Borussia Dortmund go into this fixture on the back of an away win against Hoffenheim in the German Bundesliga. They have played two league games and won both. As for their Spanish opponents, they are yet to win a game in LaLiga, having lost two and drawn two. Their last game was a home loss against Deportivo de A Coruña. The last time these two teams met, Dortmund thrashed Villarreal 4-0 at the Signal Iduna Park. Injury-wise, Ramy Bensebaini and Nico Schlotterbeck are out for Dortmund and as for Villarreal, they might only have Juan Foyth and Carlos Romero out for this game. Dortmund is definitely the stronger team out of the two and they have home advantage in this fixture. Villarreal do have a fully fit squad but they are not in form and have a leaky defence that the Dortmund frontline can exploit. We believe Dortmund would win this one comfortably. Score Prediction: Dortmund 2-0 Villarreal LOSC Lille vs Real Betis French club Lille will face Spanish outfit Real Betis in their opening UCL league phase fixture. Lille are unbeaten in the league with two wins and a draw while Betis have three wins and a loss after four games but they had a great result at the weekend, defeating Real Madrid in the league but not without drama. Betis forward Troy Parrot scored the only goal of the game and Kylian Mbappé missed a late penalty to earn a draw. Injury-wise, Lille will just have one injury miss with Tanguy Nianzou Kouassi out for about two weeks. As for Betis they could miss a couple of players like Abde Ezzalzouli, Geovanni Le Celso, Diego Conde and Aitor Rubal for this fixture. These two teams played in the competition only once in 2018 and the game ended in an entertaining 2-2 draw. However, that was a long time ago and both teams have different personnel now. We believe this would be an even game that would end in a draw. Score Prediction: Lille 1-1 Real Betis Barcelona vs Feyenoord LaLiga Champions Barcelona has started their league campaign well yet again with four wins out of four. They are blowing away oppositions, having already scored a whopping 17 goals in four games. As for their Dutch opponents, Feyenoord are also unbeaten in the Eredivisie so far and won their last league encounter comfortably. This is a first-time encounter between the two sides who have never met in any European competition before. Jesse Bisiwu and Frenkie De Jong will be out for Barca due to injury issues. Bart Nieuwkoop, Gijs Smal, Jordan Bos and Jakub Moder could be doubtful for the Dutch outfit. Both teams have been in great form but Barcelona at home are very dominating. Their front line of Anthony Gordan, Lamine Yamal and Raphinha have been running riot in the league while Rodri and Pedri are controlling the game in midfield. With Barca in such threatening form, it could take a herculean effort from Feyenoord to stop them, hence we feel the hosts will win this game comfortably. Score Prediction: Barcelona 4-1 Feyenoord VfB Stuttgart vs Vikings This is another first-time encounter as Vikings are making their debut in the competition. The Norwegian league, Eliteserien has two teams in the Champions League this season with both Vikings and Bodø/Glimt qualifying for the competition this year. Stuttgart suffered a humiliating defeat against Bayern Munich in their opening league game but responded superbly in the second to win 4-1 against Köln last weekend. As for Vikings, they are placed second in their league, having won 14 out of 19 games with two losses and three draws. Their most recent game was a 1-1 draw against Sandefjord where one of their players Jesper Daland was dismissed early in the first half for a red card offence. From an injury viewpoint, Tiago Tomás, Dennis Seiman, Lorenz Assignon, Luca Jacquez and Nicolas Nartey are out on the sidelines for Stuttgart. As for their opponents, they could be without Kristoffer Haugen, Nick D’Agostino, Henrik Falchener, Martin Ove Roseth, Anders Bærtelsen and Veton Berisha for this game. Since both teams are meeting each other for the first time in the competition, they may not be aware of each other’s style of play or tactics so much. However, Stuttgart does have some very attacking forwards who can trouble the Vikings and could also be susceptible to the Vikings attack as Stuttgart is prone to conceding goals. We believe this could be an entertaining affair which would end in a narrow Stuttgart win. Score Prediction: Stuttgart 3-2 Vikings Liverpool vs Atlético Madrid Liverpool will go into this game with a confidence boost having earned their first win of the season in the 2-0 victory against Ipswich Town. In contrast, Atleti wouldn’t feel the same away on a tough away ground as they come into this match on the back of a 3-0 mauling from the Athletic Club. This is a repeat of last season’s league phase opening encounter which Liverpool won 3-2. However, having been 2-0 down, Atletico came back to draw 2-2 before Liverpool broke their hearts in stoppage-time to take all three points. Injury-wise Liverpool has a fair few out with Conor Bradley, Joe Gomez, Hugo Ekitiké and Geovanni Leoni still recovering from long-term injuries. As for Atlético, Arnau Ortiz is suspended and Alexander Sørloth is out with a muscle injury. There’s never a dull moment when these two teams meet. Goals galore and exciting end to the match have been the highlight of their encounters and we don’t expect anything less this time as well. Liverpool is starting to look better under Iraola but they still have issues in defence that the Atleti forwards can exploit. It’s going to be a close game but we feel Liverpool has the home advantage and hence they could win this one. Score Prediction: Liverpool 2-1 Atlético Madrid
