IPL Predictions

IPL 2022 looks quite intriguing. A fresh system, two new sides, a whole bunch of new players to sport the colours of their respective teams and a set of exciting games to look forward to. The second leg of the previous season was shifted to the UAE as a result of the COVID outbreak in India. Fortunately enough, the situation in India has improved, and the games are set to commence in India once again. Although the league stage games are set to take place only within the state of Maharashtra, it is quite exciting to have the IPL back in India. Hopefully, this time around, the entire season goes through as planned.
In terms of prediction, it feels like a completely new tournament with completely new sides. The mega auction meant that almost every side had to start from scratch. The past results and the legacies certain teams hold will play little to no role in determining their fate over the next few years. However, specific teams consistently pick the right bunch to have the correct support staff and technicians to come out on top. Keeping the above factors in mind, the following are my predictions for the 2022 IPL.

Prediction #1 : CSK and MI to dominate yet again?

The Chennai Super Kings always seem to find a way to leapfrog the rest of the teams in the tournament. Even in 2021, a season where many of their decisions were questioned based on the ageing players they fielded, the Super Kings managed to win the IPL. They always seem to invest in reliable and solid players rather than going for the flashy options. Apart from the senior pros in MS Dhoni, Dwayne Bravo and Ravi Jadeja, Chennai have added solid left-handed Kiwi Devon Conway to their batting lineup. They also continue to show their faith in Moeen Ali, who could be extremely dangerous with the bat and canny with the ball.

In terms of buys going under the radar, the CSK brought in Sri Lankan off-spinner Maheesh Theekshana, who could be pretty handy during the tournament. The signs look great for the team to have yet another successful IPL.

On the other hand, the Mumbai Indians look like a slightly weakened side compared to the previous years. Their batting is heavily reliant on the likes of Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, and Suryakumar Yadav. Their bowling also places a large amount of reliance on Jasprit Bumrah and new boy Jofra Archer. Although it looks as though the Indians have several big names as part of their side, the rest of the squad does not match the standards of previous seasons. Thus, it could be a real toss-up this time around as to whether the MI make the Playoffs or not.

Prediction #2 : RCB to come close to winning their maiden title?

The RCB fans have longed and waited for their team to win their maiden IPL title, though it doesn’t look like this will be their year. Although the Royal Challengers look fairly balanced on paper, their squad depth could come back to bite them during the season.

Once more, the RCB are heavily reliant on international stars like Faf du Plessis and Glenn Maxwell to deliver. Their bowling looks assured, however, with Wanindu Hasaranga and Mohammed Siraj leading the attack. A constant worry for the RCB, though, will be the choice of Indian players they go with. They will be forced into playing Shahbaz Ahmed nearly every game. Perhaps they will also have to rely on the young Anuj Rawat to fill up their batting lineup. Bangalore will be counting on their younger Indian stars to achieve their goals in 2022.

Prediction #3 : RR look explosive

The Rajasthan Royals look the most exciting side to watch in terms of explosive batting power and skilful bowling talent. The Royals will look to stack their batting, starting with the two young Indian openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Devdutt Padikkal. They could then follow the youngsters with the likes of Sanju Samson, Jos Butler and Shemron Hetmeyer, with Jimmy Neesham playing the deep finisher’s role.

The Royals have enough experience in their bowling lineup as well. Ravi Ashwin and Trent Boult will lead the line with the ball, and their experience will surely help their team see games through. The possibility of the RR having a title-winning campaign is reasonably practical, and one mustn’t be surprised if they go on to achieve this feat.

Prediction #4 : What’s in it for the new boys?

For the new sides, the Lucknow Super Giants and the Gujarat Titans, their first seasons in the IPL could prove tricky. The Super Giants, however, look far better than their fellow debutants. The side looks balanced, with the likes of KL Rahul, Quinton de Kock, Jason Holder and Marcus Stoinis forming the core group of senior players in the side. They will receive help from Indian players like Manish Pandey, Ravi Bishnoi and Krunal Pandya, who have proven their worth on the international stage. Lucknow have also brought in replacements and squad depth: players like Dushmatha Chmeera and Mark Wood could step in to replace one another. The same goes for Evan Lewis and Quinton de Kock. On paper, the Lucknow Super Giants definitely look like having the potential to challenge for the Playoffs.

The Gujarat Giants’ chances to make the Playoffs, on the other hand, do not look very promising. The balance of the side is questionable. The Titans have gone for some explosive foreign players in the form of Matthew Wade, Jason Roy, and Rashid Khan, but they lack the depth that the Indian players generally provide. Much of the responsibility rests on the shoulders of players like Hardik Pandya and Shubman Gill. The Titans’ chances of making the Playoffs look quite slim.

Prediction #5 : KKR to continue their consistency in the IPL

The Kolkata Knight Riders have produced yet another consistent-looking squad for the 2022 IPL. Their bowling attack looks sharp as ever. The two spinners, Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy, will give batters a hard time in the middle overs. They also have the experience of the likes of Andre Russell, Tim Southee and Pat Cummins with the ball. The only area in which the Knight Riders look a little short is the batting side of things. Although the likes of Aaron Finch, Venkatesh Iyer, and Shreyas Iyer will be expected to score the runs for the side, Indian batters like Nitish Rana and Ajinkya Rahane will be expected to step up as well. All in all, the Knight Riders have the squad to make it to the Playoffs once again.

Prediction No #6 : The top four

Going by the narrative of this article, the top four could include the Chennai Super Kings, the Kolkata Knight Riders, the Lucknow Super Giants, and the Rajasthan Royals. However, teams like the Royal Challengers Bangalore, the Mumbai Indians and the Delhi Capitals are sure to give the top sides a run for their money.
