Early predictions for ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026

Neha Johri Neha Johri

With almost two months to go for the ICC 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup, there is a lot of buzz around the tournament due to the massive popularity of the shortest format. The World Cup is being hosted by India and Sri Lanka, to be held from 7th February – 8th March 2026.

Defending champions India will be playing in home conditions but in the T20 format, it’s not much of an advantage as players from countries outside the subcontinent are also familiar with the pitches due to participating in the various domestic T20 leagues here.

Let’s take a look at some Key contenders and get in some early predictions for the tournament –

Contenders for the title

India

Having won the title in the 2024 edition of the T20 World Cup, India are the favourites again. Due to the enduring success of the Indian Premier League (IPL), India has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to fielding a first eleven. Even though the three stalwarts of Indian cricket – Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja will no more be a part of this Indian side, there are talented youngsters in Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill who have taken up the responsibility in the shorter format. India’s major advantage lies in their spin department – Varun Chakaravarthy, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav offer variety and wicket taking ability in the middle overs.

India has a good balance of batters and bowlers and being captained by one of the best T20 batters in the world in Suryakumar Yadav, this Indian team is all set to rule another ICC tournament yet again.

England

England is yet another team who could be the favourites to win the tournament if they can find their best combination. With the likes of Phil Salt, Jos Buttler and Liam Livingstone, they have some of the most lethal T20 batters in their lineup. The English also have express pace in their ranks with Mark Wood, Jofra Archer and Brydon Carse who can knock-off the early wickets. They also have decent allrounders who can bat and bowl and offer that much-needed balance in a limited-over format.

However, playing in the subcontinent, they do lack experienced spin bowling options except for Adil Rashid. Having said that, England will still be one of the favourites to win the tournament due to their explosive batting unit.

South Africa

The runners-up from the 2024 T20 World Cup, the Proteas have grown leaps and bounds when it comes to performing in ICC tournaments.

The World Test Championships (WTC) winners will go into this tournament with a lot of confidence, having broken the jinx of winning an ICC Trophy in a long time. The Proteas T20 team also possesses great batting and bowling talent. Aidan Markram, Dewald Brevis, David Miller, Tristan Stubbs and Corbin Bosch are all superb T20 players with a high strike-rate. The return of Quinton de Kock to the T20 fold has further added experience and fiery batting at the top of the lineup.

As for their bowlers, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, Nandre Burger and Marco Jansen offer the wicket-taking fast bowling options while Keshav Maharaj and George Linde can take important wickets with their Off-Spin.

From almost winning the trophy last time around, the Proteas would be looking to go all the way this time.

Australia

The Aussies are the most successful team when it comes to ICC Tournaments. Having won the limited overs trophy numerous times, they can never be counted out.

The Australian T20 team is filled with myriad match-winners who can single-handedly win them games, especially their openers Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head who can bat out an opposition in a matter of few overs. Josh Englis, Tim David and Marcus Stoinis are other destructive batters in their side.

As for the bowling department, quickies Josh Hazelwood, Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins are probably the most lethal pace bowling trio in the world. Adam Zampa adds another level of world-class bowing with his leg-spin to make them a formidable bowling attack.

Though the Aussies didn’t perform up to their usual high standards in the previous edition, they have the perfect balance of batters, bowlers and allrounders to take the trophy home this time. Another factor that could be an advantage is that most of their first team players have played in the IPL and hence they are familiar with the pitch and the conditions in the subcontinent.

New Zealand

The Kiwis are one of the most underrated but one of the most consistent sides when it comes to the ICC Tournaments. Though they were underwhelming in the  2024 T20 World Cup, the Black Caps have the batting and bowling prowess to beat anyone on their day.

Their starting line-up has some top batters with Tim Seifert, Rachin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips and Mark Chapman while the likes of Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson, Kyle Jamieson and Mitchell Santner offer top-class bowling options.

The Kiwis have always been known to perform as a collective and even though they may not consist of many world-class players, they are a dangerous side that can never be taken lightly. The Black Caps are certainly one of the teams to watch out for at the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Associate nations: Who can cause an upset?

Every group in the group-stage will also consist of Associate cricket nations that have qualified for the 2026 T20 World Cup to compete with the very best in the world. Afghanistan Cricket Team has come a long way from an Associate nation to a Test playing nation. Their run to the last edition’s semi-finals must have motivated a lot of the Associate Nations to follow on the same path.

The following Associate Nations could cause an upset in this edition –

USA

Cricket has gained huge popularity in the USA due to the huge diaspora of people from South Asia residing in the States. Hence, the United States team consists of a lot of Indian-origin players.

The team from the USA had qualified for the previous edition as well, also causing a massive upset when they defeated Pakistan in the group stages and managed to reach the Super Eight. Saurabh Netravalkar was the star of the show for the American side, contributing with the ball. The American side has batting strength in Monank Patel, Saiteja Mukamalla, Milind Kumar and Shayan Jahangir. They have decent bowlers in Jasdeep Singh, Saurabh Netravalkar and Ayan Desai who can cause trouble for the opposition batters.

The USA definitely has the ability to upset the big teams even this time around. However, amidst experienced campaigners, getting past the Super Eight may be difficult for them.

Netherlands

The Dutch team has been playing in ICC tournaments for a while now but they haven’t been able to make the kind of impact like Afghanistan.

Netherlands has caused an upset or two at the World Cup, especially the 2022 T20 World Cup where they caused a massive upset by defeating South Africa in the Super 12 and also knocking the Proteas out of the tournament.

The Dutch have some experienced players in Scott Edwards, Max O’Dowd, Vikramjit Singh, Sybrand Englbrecht and Bas de Leede. In the bowling department, they have Aryan Dutt, Vivian Kingma, Logan van de Beek and Bas de Leede.

While the 2026 edition didn’t go well for the Men in Orange, Netherlands has the might to cause massive upsets this time around.

Nepal

This is the second successive qualification for Nepal at the ICC T20 World Cup. Nepal batsman Dipendra Singh Airee also holds the record for the fastest T20 fifty in just 9 balls at the 2023 Asian Games.

In the World T20 qualifiers as well, Nepal won their games comfortably to qualify for the main ICC event. Recently, Nepal also upset West Indies 2-1 in a bilateral T20 series held in Sharjah.

Nepal has some decent batters with Kushal Bhurtel, Aasif Sheikh, Rohit Paudel and Dipendra Singh Airee in their side while Aadil Ansari, Lalit Rajbanshi and Karan KC are decent bowlers with a few top allrounders as well.

Nepal can definitely make an impact this time around and considering their recent form, the Asian newcomers shouldn’t be taken lightly at the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Super 8 predictions

The big guns have the teams to overpower the new ones at the upcoming 2026 T20 World Cup. Hence, taking into consideration the recent form, squad strength and teams familiar with conditions in the subcontinent, below is my prediction for the teams qualifying for the Super Eight –

Group A | India and Pakistan
Group B | Australia and Sri Lanka
Group C | England and Bangladesh
Group D | New Zealand and South Africa

Knockout rounds predictions

From the aforementioned sides that could likely qualify for the Super Eight, the teams to qualify for the knockouts would be the ones with the most in-form players with the ability to handle big-match pressure.

Our pick for the semi-finalists are: India, Australia, England, and South Africa.

Winners prediction

Though all the above teams could beat anyone on their day, due to home advantage, India could make it to the final against Australia who also have a very strong side.

Out of the two, Australia will hold an edge going into this final due to their previous final wins in ICC tournaments but playing at home and having a more balanced T20 side than Australia, India could very well go on to lift the T20 World Cup again.
