Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands won gold in women’s marathon gold on the final day of the 2024 Paris Olympics in a thrilling fashion, overtaking Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa in the final seconds of the race to take home the biggest prize. She also set an Olympic record of 2 hours, 22 minutes, and 55 seconds.

Denmark defeated Germany 39-26 in the men’s handball gold medal match. Spain beat Slovenia 23-22 in a close encounter to clinch the bronze medal.
Italy defeated the USA 3-0 in the women’s volleyball finals to clinch the gold in a one-sided encounter. Brazil took the bronze by beating Türkiye.
Philip Kim of Canada became the first b-boy to win an Olympic gold in Breaking, beating France’s Dany Dann by winning all three rounds.
The USA won an incredibly close encounter in the women’s basketball finals by beating France 67-66, thereby clinching their eighth straight Olympic gold. Australia took the bronze beating Belgium 85-81.
Another controversial incident hit the Paris Olympics when the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) ruled against American gymnast Jordan Chiles, who had won a bronze medal in the floor exercise final. According to CAS, the judging panel had improperly granted an inquiry that increased her score, moving her into the bronze position. This ruling means Chiles will have to return her medal, which will be awarded to Romania’s Ana Barbosu.
Meanwhile, the final ruling on Vinesh Phogat’s appeal for being awarded the silver medal upon DQ has been deferred to August 13 by CAS.

As the Paris 2024 Olympics drew to a close, the US finished first in the medals tally with 40 gold medals and a whopping 126 medals in total. China came second with 40 gold medals, with Japan third with 20 golds. India ended the Games 71st in the table.
