Here is our Preview and Predictions for the game.
FIFA WC26 | Group J: AUT vs JOR | 09:30 IST, 17 June, 2026
Austria are back in the World Cup 28 years after making their last appearance, a group-stage exit in France. Under the guidance of Ralf Rangnick, they have slowly built themselves to be a quietly exciting outfit, and their qualifying campaign was testament to their progress.
They finished top of their group while highlighting their attacking prowess and defensive solidity as well. Scoring 23 and conceding just 5, they have made the rest of the European nations take notice of their skill and rising stature.
For Jordan, this World Cup marks their debut in the competition after 9 previously unsuccessful attempts. They had come very close in 2014, when they made the intercontinental playoffs, but they were defeated by Uruguay back then. This time around, they did not need the playoffs as they managed to book their spot after finishing second behind South Korea in the third round of the Asian Qualifiers.
Austria have become pressing monsters under Ralf Rangnick, which is no surprise given that the German is known as the pioneer of the famous “gegenpressing” philosophy which has been adopted b y so many managers in the world. Under his tutelage, the Austrians like to hassle their opponents into mistakes as they look to force the pace of the game on their opponents.
The stability and familiarity in the side to Rangnick’s methods means that everyone in their side knows their roles and responsibilities to the point of reflex, which is why they almost never lose that balance as a pressing side when things go wrong.
As far as Jordan are concerned, their head coach Jamal Sellami makes use of a 3-4-3 that seeks to utilise the dynamism of his full-backs to maximise the output of their star attackers upfront via quick and deadly transitions, with clear roles assigned to the goalkeeper in rallying and commanding the backline.
Austria have the experience of David Alaba, Marcel Sabitzer, and Marko Arnautovic to count on, but expect Bayern Munich man Konrad Laimer to be the pick of the players for the Austrians in this tournament, especially with him coming on the back of an impressive club season for the German Champions.
For Jordan, their key players will be Moussa Al-Tamari, who had a great season with Ligue 1 side Rennes, and veteran forward Mahmoud Al-Mardi.
It is going to be a clash of styles, with pressing intensity meeting defensive strength and pacy transitions. However, we feel that Austria start as favourites in this competition to eventually edge the Jordanians to get the 3 points.
Score Predictions: Austria 2-1 Jordan
Venue: San Francisco Bay Area Stadium, Santa Clara.
