As the new tennis season commences, all eyes would be fixated on the first Grand Slam of the year – the Australian Open. Last year, the Slam in Melbourne Park witnessed a record crowd turnout both in the Men’s as well as the Women’s categories. The Men’s Singles final was an absolute spectacle with World No. 1 Jannik Sinner coming back from two sets down to defeat Daniil Medvedev to clinch his first Australian Open and his first Grand Slam title as well.
The new season will bring new challenges for all players and so early in the season, it would be interesting to see which players hit the ground running and run away with the coveted trophy.
Here we take a look at Top 8 contenders for the Australian Open Men’s Singles title –
Jannik Sinner (Italy)
The World No. 1 Jannik Sinner ended the year on a high winning the US Open and the Nitto ATP Masters Finals looking unbeatable on the hard courts. He is the defending champion at the Australian Open and looks most likely to conquer the hard courts at Melbourne. He managed to beat Novak Djokovic in the semis last year which hadn’t been achieved in probably a decade and then came back from two sets down to take home his first Australian Open title.
The Italian is relentless in play. Armed with a decent serve, athleticism, balance and a great all-round play coupled with very few unforced errors, Sinner is the player to beat right now. His only hindrance could be his off the court issues that can lead to a shock exit or a poor result. But apart from that, Sinner has been in prolific form over the past year and could most likely be lifting the trophy after the finals are concluded.
Carlos Alcaraz (Spain)
This is the only Grand Slam trophy missing from Carlos Alcaraz’s collection to make it a Career slam at just 21 years old. He is a sensational player and has a game suited to all kinds of surfaces. Alongside Jannik Sinner, he is another player who had an incredible season winning his first French Open and a second Wimbledon title.
The Spaniard is one of the most exciting players to watch on the ATP Tour and has what it takes to even challenge and beat Jannik Sinner. He is a bundle of energy on court and just like his idol Rafael Nadal, he makes the opponents toil for every point, possesses exquisite drop shots and volleys as well. Though, he would like to improve his record at the Australian Open where his best result is reaching the Quarter-final last year. If he finds his touch on the hard court at the Rod Laver Arena, he could very well take his first Australian Open title home, completing a magnificent career slam.
Alexander Zverev (Germany)
When Alexander Zverev broke onto the scene, there was a huge uproar in the tennis world regarding his ability and talent, some even comparing him to the great Roger Federer. However, even though he has managed to break into the Top 5 and has an Olympic Gold to his name, he is yet to prove his prodigious talent by adding a grand slam to his impressive tally of 23 Career ATP titles.
Zverev had a decent 2024 season, winning two ATP 1000 Masters Titles and reaching his first Grand Slam final at Roland Garros. He has performed consistently at the four slams and is another contender for the Australian Open crown. Zverev possesses in his armour one of the most lethal serves on the Men’s tour, add to that a well-rounded player comfortable both at the baseline and the net, he is a dangerous adversary for one and all. Maybe, 2025 is the year Zverev finally breaks his grand slam hoodoo.
Novak Djokovic (Serbia)
When talking about the contenders for the title, the 10-times Australian Open Champion can’t simply be ignored. Even though he had a fairly dismal 2024 season by his usually incredible standards, Novak Djokovic is the greatest player in tennis more so now that he has completed a career Golden Slam by claiming the most vaunted Olympic Gold.
The Serbian looked sluggish on the courts both physically and mentally, was marred by injuries but we all have witnessed his mentality and know he may still go on to shrug off a poor season and come back roaring at his favourite tournament. Although he isn’t really in his prime and has to deal with far more athletic and mentally strong opponents now, he is still not finished. Anyone playing him knows that the champion can make a comeback anytime. He may not be a sure-shot favourite to win the title but write off the legend at your own peril.
Taylor Fritz (USA)
Taylor Fritz had an incredible ending to the 2024 season where he managed to reach his first Grand Slam final at the US Open and also the Nitto ATP Masters finals where he lost to Jannik Sinner on both occasions. He also won two ATP Titles and has reached a career high World No. 4 ranking, also being the top ranked American player currently.
Fritz has made remarkable improvements in 2024 and now has the confidence to beat any top player. He already had a massive serve and fierce groundstrokes in his repertoire but he has improved his volleys and drop shots as well. Add to that, the ability to hold his nerves in difficult situations and he has become a much stronger player. He has already shown that he is comfortable on the hard courts and could very well cross the final hurdle at the Australian Open come January, 2025.
Daniil Medvedev (Russia)
A three-time consecutive finalist at the Australian Open, Daniil Medvedev is one of the most consistent players on the hard courts. Unfortunately, he hasn’t been able to cross the final hurdle here at Melbourne Park but this season could be different where he could finally manage to lift the Australian Open trophy.
Medvedev hasn’t had a great season in 2024 where he didn’t manage to win a single ATP title. However, his performances at the Slams were fairly consistent, reaching the finals at the Australian Open, Semis at the Wimbledon and Quarter-finals at the US Open. Moreover, he can’t be underestimated.as he has one of the most flawless games at the hard courts – coupled with a big serve and powerful ground strokes, the Russian is a dangerous opponent for anyone on his day.
Alex De Minaur (Australia)
A home crowd favourite, Alex De Minaur is another player to watch out for at the Australian Open. He is currently ranked as World No. 9. De Minaur started the 2024 season well but it kind of fizzled out at the end with a couple of injuries. However, he debuted at the Nitto ATP Finals and became the first Aussie player to compete in the finals since Lleyton Hewitt in 2004.
De Minaur is known for his speed and agility on court. Athleticism and defensive ability define the Aussie well. Similar to Andy Murray, he utilizes the counter punching technique by defending and building points and then going for his winners. He has also beaten higher ranked players last season and backed by a vociferous Australian crowd, De Minaur could very well follow in Hewitt’s footsteps and make his way to an Australian Open title this season.
Andrey Rublev (Russia)
The temperamental Russian, Andrey Rublev is probably the most emotional player on the ATP tour. He wears his heart on his sleeves and can be seen entertaining the crowds with his antics. However, he isn’t just limited to antics on-court, he has also been one of the most consistent players over the years. However, Rublev’s hindrance is probably more mental than physical or skill-related.His inability to hold his nerve and control his emotions in the tense situations has led to his downfall more often. He has a great record in the ATP Tour with a career 16 ATP titles so far and has managed to beat higher ranked players as well. He has been qualifying for the year end Nitto ATP Finals for five years in a row so consistency has been key for the Russian.
Armed with an attacking style, he can surprise the opponents with his thunderous forehands and baseline play. In addition, he is quite athletic on court and can play defensive tennis too if the situation demands. Also, hard court is one of his favoured surfaces and this could be the season, he raises his standards to another level and ends up being a surprise Australian Open winner.
