Scuderia Ferrari HP suffered a double whammy right after the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix concluded as both their drivers, Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, were disqualified from the race. Pierre Gasly of the BWT Alpine F1 Team was also disqualified from the Shanghai race.
All three failed to clear the post-race technical checks, with Leclerc’s and Gasly’s cars found to be underweight by one kilogram each.
Hamilton, meanwhile, had “excessive wear” on his rearward skids, which disqualified the seven-time World Champion. Having won the Sprint race at the weekend, the disqualification will be a bitter pill to swallow for the 40-year-old.
The FIA released the following statement on Hamilton’s disqualification:
“The plank assembly of Car 44 was measured and found to be 8.6mm (LHS), 8.6mm (car centerline) and 8.5mm (RHS). This is below the minimum thickness of 9mm specified under Article 3.5.9 of the Technical Regulations. During the hearing the team representative confirmed that the measurement is correct and that all required procedures were performed correctly. The team also acknowledged that there were no mitigating circumstances and that it was a genuine error by the team. The Stewards determine that Article 3.5.9 of the FIA Formula 1 Technical Regulations has been breached and therefore the standard penalty of a disqualification needs to be applied for such an infringement.“
With the two Ferrari drivers disqualified, Esetban Ocon has been moved up to fifth, with Kimi Anotelli, Alex Albon, Ollie Bearman, Lance Stroll, and Carlos Sainz rounding up the points places, in that order. Gasly, who finished 11th, would’ve made it to the points places himself but for his own disqualification.
Alpine are now the only team yet to score a point this year after the opening two races.
Ferrari’s double disqualification hurts them the most in the Constructors’ Standings. They are now fifth in the table with 17 points, tied with Williams Racing. Haas have gained the most from their misery, with their drivers’ points finishes putting them three points off Ferrari.
