South Africa will take on New Zealand in the 1st Semifinal at Eden Gardens on 4th March 2026.
Here, we present our preview and predictions for the 1st semifinal between South Africa and New Zealand
ICC Men’s T20 WC 2026 1st Semifinal | Match 53: South Africa vs New Zealand | 19:00 IST, March 4, 2026
The South Africans have been the standout performers this tournament – winning all seven group and Super8 stage fixtures. Their batters have stepped up whenever called upon while their bowling unit has been the class of the field. Afghanistan were the only ones who came close to beating Aiden Markram’s side, while the likes of India, West Indies and Zimbabwe were brushed aside with relative ease in the Super8 stage.
Skipper Aiden Markram leads the runscoring chart for the Proteas with 268 runs while the rest of the top and middle order batters have also been amongst the runs. In the bowling department, Lungi Ngidi leads the list with 12 wickets with both Marco Jansen and Corbin Bosch close behind with 11 wickets each – they are the only team to boast three bowlers with 10 or more wickets each.
As for New Zealand, the Kiwis would count themselves fortunate not to get knocked out after capitulating against England in their final Super8 stage fixture. However, this has been the template of their entire campaign so far this tournament. Despite making the semis, New Zealand have been far from their best and are definitely underdogs – at least on paper – when paired up against their opponents who also beat them during the group stages.
With the bat, swashbuckling openers Tim Seifert and Finn Allen lead the runscoring chart for the Kiwis while Glenn Philips has also consistently contributed from the middle-order. That said, the rest of batters including big names like Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell have flattered to deceive. In the bowling department, surprisingly, Rachin Ravindra has been their highest wicket-taker while Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson are the only other two bowlers to pick five or more wickets – with the former poised to miss this game following the birth of his second child.
In terms of weather forecast and pitch report, conditions expect to be clear and perfect for cricket. However, due could play a role during the second innings. As evident from the six games played here at this venue so far, the surface here at the Eden Gardens offers a batting friendly wicket although there could be some purchase for the slower bowlers.
Looking ahead to this fixture, the Proteas are brimming with confidence and eyeing a second T20 World Cup final on the bounce while the Kiwis despite their inconsistencies find themselves one step away from another World Cup final – having lost the final of the 2021 edition. Thus, considering both form and recent head-to-head match-ups, we’re backing Aiden Markram’s men to reach their second final on the bounce.
