ICC Men’s T20 WC 2026: Match 54- India vs England: Semifinal 2 | 19:00, 05 March
India have once again found wind in their sails and their campaign is now well and truly back on track following that chastening defeat against South Africa in their first game of the Super 8. Consecutive and convincing victories against Zimbabwe and West Indies means that India have revived their hopes of winning it all in rather spectacular style.
The game against West Indies brought out the best, and in certain areas, the worst out of the Indian side as well. Poor fielding has once again been the achilles heel of this Indian side, with their catching efficiency being among the worst in the tournament. Abhishek Sharma was culpable of dropping two chances, one of which was a simple chance offered by Roston Chase, who went on to make a quickfire 40 which went a long way in taking the Windies to 195.
Apart from poor catching, the ground fielding has also been spotty in patches, with the likes of Varun Chakravarthy, Arshdeep Singh, and Jasprit Bumrah not the most agile of movers in the field. The opening woes still remain, with Abhishek Sharma’s form now reaching levels of worry, despite the overall calm approach of the think-tank with regards to his form. He has scored a measly 80 runs in 6 innings and has failed to get going bar that one innings against Zimbabwe. The batting has also yet to see skipper Suryakumar Yadav get good runs under his belt, with all of his innings looking painstaking and laborious, which adds further pressure on the rest of the batting order.
The bowling also seems to be lacking fluency in bits and pieces, with Varun, Arshdeep Singh, and Bumrah all going for plenty in various stages of different matches. Vaarun was clobbered against South Africa, while Arshdeep and Bumrah were taken for plenty in the game against West Indies. Even the normally reliable Hardik Pandya has gone above 10 rpo in games, and that does not bode well for India, especially in the semis.
However, there are positives too. Sanju Samson has come into the side and has given back-to-back brilliant performances with the bat. His match-winning 97 showcased his best and that is exactly what will be needed tomorrow. The likes of Shivam Dube have come up with crucial contributions, and the bowling has also managed to tighten the screws when they have gotten their act together in certain games.
England will quietly fancy their chances as well, entering the semifinals with a perfect record in the Super 8 stages. They will take big inspiration from their win against New Zealand though, where they pulled out a win from a position where a defeat seemed the more likely outcome entering the final two overs of that contest.
Despite the wins, however, there are issues to contend with for Harry Brook’s side, and the chief of them is the horrendous run of his opening pair. Jos Buttler and Phil Salt have just not been able to get going this tournament, with Buttler genuinely looking like a man bereft of confidence and any sort of momentum in his favour. He has just scored 62 runs in 7 innings, and has been dismissed for single digit scores in his last 5 innings. Salt has not been faring that better too, and that has made the lives of the batters after them that much more difficult. Bar Harry Brook and Will Jacks, the likes of Tom Banton, Jacob Bethell, and Sam Curran have failed to find any sort of fluency with the bat.
Another issue that will be against them is that all of England’s wins have come in Sri Lanka, where the pitches are much more spin-friendly bringing the part-timers in play. However, their record in India has been poor, with all of their spinners, even the uber-consistent Adil Rashid, have been taken for plenty on the much bouncier and truer nature of the surfaces in India.
However, Will Jacks has been England’s player of the tournament this World Cup. Be it with the bat, ball, or for a moment of magic in the field, the all-rounder has done it all for the Three Lions. It was his burst late in the game against New Zealand that took them to victory, and his bowling effort against Sri Lanka broke their back while defending a low score. Harry Brook has been effective with the bat and will look to add another big innings in what is turning out to be a pretty decent first tournament as captain for the Yorkshireman.
It has been a very interesting clash when these two sides meet, and there is an interesting bit of trivia to it as well. England beat India in 2022 in the semifinals, and India managed to inflict their revenge in the next World Cup in 2024. Both of these sides went on to win the tournament after winning this match. So both India and England will hope that this continues to remain the theme for this one as well.
England have been dodgy, but unbeaten in the Super 8. India have bounced back in style after a humbling defeat. Both sides will be eager to make the final, but only one of them will go through. Based on what we have seen in the tournament so far, we believe that it will be hosts India who start as favourites in this semifinal and will make it ahead to the Final of the tournament.
