ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 | Match 30: SL vs AUS | 19:00, February 16, 2026
After their shock loss to Zimbabwe, the Australian squad are in a spot of bother as they need to dig deep to find their way to the Super Eights. Australia’s biggest issue in their opening games has been their batting. The Australian top order, consisting of an explosive lineup of Travis Head, Cameron Green and Tim David have all failed two games in a row and with their captain Mitchell Marsh sitting on the bench with an injury, their experienced batters need to step up. A middle order consisting of the likes of Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell and Matt Renshaw have tried to bail the team out and while it worked against Ireland, they couldn’t get the job done against Zimbabwe. At Pallekele, where the ball will be turning, the Australian big hitters need to find a way to combat that and put up a good score on the board. If their form wasn’t already a headache, the Australians also are sweating it out over the fitness of their captain Mitchell Marsh, who has missed both the games his team has played so far due to a groin injury. Australia have even flown in former captain Steve Smith as a potential back-up for Marsh, should Marsh not be able to recover in time.
Australia’s bowling has been carried by their spinners, led by Adam Zampa with able support from Matthew Kuhnemann and Glenn Maxwell. The likes of Marcus Stoinis, Nathan Ellis have been handy on the slower wickets as well but their quicks, Ben Dwarshuis, Xavier Bartlett have been leaking runs, something the Australians will look to fix. Injuries though, seem to be Australia’s biggest enemy. With Marsh missing out both games, Australia also had Josh Hazlewood ruled out of the T20 World Cup 2026 just days before the start of the tournament and with no announcement made for Hazlewood’s replacement, things went from bad to worse against Zimbabwe as Marcus Stoinis also pulled up during bowling and wasn’t able to complete his over. Stoinis though returned to bat.
The co-hosts, Sri Lanka, are on a strong run of form, picking up wins from both their games and will be looking to make it three out of three. The Lankans have been clinical with the bat, with the top and middle order, all getting runs under their belt. Even with Wanindu Hasaranga being ruled out of the World Cup, the Lankan spin duo of Maheesh Theekshana and Dunith Wellalage have been economical and key for the co-hosts. With slowly all boxes being ticked off, the Lankan team is beginning to look like a strong contender.
The Pallekele ground is a slow wicket which will provide a lot of runs and assistance to the spinners. Given the form of both the teams and the recent struggles of the Australian team, Sri Lanka start as the favourites to pick up a win in this encounter.
