On the second day of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, we have two of the most successful franchises in the league’s history facing off, with five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) and three-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) kicking off their campaign.

KKR come into the new season plagued with injuries, while MI are high on confidence owing to the fact that several of their star Indian players (Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, and Jasprit Bumrah) come into the tournament off a triumphant campaign at the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

For Match 2 of the 2026 IPL season, here we present our preview and predictions.

Indian Premier League 2026 | Match 2: Mumbai Indians vs Kolkata Knight Riders | 19:30 IST, March 29

Five-time champions and one of the early tournament favourites, MI head into a new season looking for that record sixth title and to write themselves into the record books. They have a well-balanced squad, with enough firepower in both departments thanks to some of the most dangerous white-ball players in the world.

Former Team India and Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma is the big name at the top of the order. He will have South African keeper Quinton de Kock back at the top with him, forming an explosive opening pair. The top and middle orders will have plenty of experience as well via Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Naman Dhir, Hardik Pandya, Will Jacks, Sherfane Rutherford, and Mitchell Santner, amongst others, with the likes of Ryan Rickelton and Robin Minz providing further batting depth.

MI also have a host of all-rounders in Pandya, Santner, Jacks, and Corbin Bosch who will provide the team with balance. Their bowling attack will be led by Jasprit Bumrah, who will have an incredible support act in the likes of Trent Boult, Mayank Markande, AM Ghazanfar, Deepak Chahar, and Shardul Thakur.

Overall, the Mumbai Indians seem to have all bases covered and are unquestionably one of the favourites for the title.

The Kolkata Knight Riders, on the other hand, come into the season hamstrung with injuries to their bowling unit. On the BCCI’s directive, they had to release their experienced veteran bowler Mustafizur Rahman, and since then they’ve seen their Indian seamers Harshit Rana and Akash Deep ruled out of the tournament due to injury. Matheesha Pathirana, a big buy, is also injured and will only be available for selection in the second half of April.

Already low on firepower, these issues in their pace unit are not a good sign for the three-time IPL champions. There will be added pressure on veteran spinners Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy, who will be expected to step up consistently.

KKR have brought in Zimbabwe’s Blessing Muzarabani as a replacement for Rahman, with Indian seamers Navdeep Saini and Saurabh Dubey replacing Rana and Deep. Their bowling attack does include a host of Indian talent thanks to the likes of Umran Malik, Vaibhav Arora, and Kartik Tyagi, but they are lacking in experience and will need Narine more than ever to lead the attack. Anukul Roy will provide KKR with a handy option with the ball and bat lower down the order and is one of the players to look out for.

Batting is a silver lining for KKR. They have the in-form New Zealand duo of Finn Allen and Tim Seifert at the top of the order along with their top acquisition, Cameron Green. Their Indian batting unit will be led by captain Ajinkya Rahane, and with Rinku Singh, Ramandeep Singh, Rahul Tripathi, Manish Pandey, and Angkrish Raghuvanshi also in the mix, there is plenty of depth and firepower in their batting contingent.

Wankhede is known to be a ground that produces plenty of runs, which means we should be in for a high-scoring game, especially given the batting firepower both these teams possess.

During the recent T20 World Cup, there was some turn on offer on this pitch, which means spinners may come into play. This will be interesting, especially considering KKR’s strong spin attack.

That said, we back the Mumbai Indians to start as favourites due to a stronger playing XI and greater squad depth.

Fantasy XI: Rohit Sharma, Finn Allen, Quinton de Kock (c), Suryakumar Yadav, Cameron Green, Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, Hardik Pandya, Sunil Narine (vc), Jasprit Bumrah, Varun Chakravarthy

Venue: Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai
Winners Prediction: Mumbai Indians
