It is the IPL season, and we are all here for it.

The excitement is hitting fever pitch as franchise cricket’s biggest extravaganza kicks off on Saturday, with defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru taking on SunRisers Hyderabad in what is touted to be a mouth-watering contest to kickstart the 19th season of the Indian Premier League.

For the game, here we present our preview and predictions.

Indian Premier League 2026 | Match 1: Royal Challengers Bengaluru vs SunRisers Hyderabad | 19:30 IST, 28 March

For the first time, the Royal Challengers enter the tournament not as the hunters, but the hunted. They are the reigning champions, a feeling that they will welcome after years of chasing the title. Their Director of Cricket, Mo Bobat, has been open about the fact that he does not want the team to be thinking about defending the title; rather, he wants them to win it again.

The squad does not have a lot of new faces, which is understandable given that they wanted to retain the title-winning core for consistency and familiarity. The likes of Phil Salt, Jacob Bethell, Josh Hazlewood, Tim David, and Romario Shepherd will return, along with Virat Kohli, who has had a rather long break since he last turned out for India in the ODI series against New Zealand at the start of the year.

There are a couple of new faces, though. Jordan Cox comes in to add a reliable wicketkeeping option for RCB, as does all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer, who can not only be a decent bowling back-up but also a floater who can bat anywhere in the top seven.

There is also continuity in the coaching staff, meaning that RCB enter this tournament as one of the least-changed sides this season, and that could be a great thing as the season goes on.

Their opponents, SunRisers Hyderabad, have not had the best of build-ups in the lead up to this game and have had a few injury issues. Skipper Pat Cummins is yet to reach full fitness despite linking up with his teammates, while highly rated pacer Jack Edwards, who was brought in at the last auction, has been ruled out of the IPL because of injury, leading SRH to rope in David Payne as his replacement.

Apart from the cricket, there has been outrage against SunRisers owner Kavya Maran over his side in The Hundred, SunRisers Leeds, buying a Pakistan international. Safe to say, the spotlight will be a little more pronounced on the Hyderabad franchise on matchday one.

SRH made a few additions in the auction. They have bolstered their side with all-rounders, with Brydon Carse and Liam Livingstone coming in to shore up an already frightening batting side that contains Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Travis Head, and Heinrich Klaasen. Kishan has also been named the stand-in captain until Cummins returns to full fitness.

With Chinnaswamy back in the fold to host IPL games, expect a mad atmosphere for the home side as they begin their title defence. With the ground being an absolute belter for batting, expect nothing less than a run-fest given the batting prowess that both these teams possess.

While on the surface it looks like a pretty close contest, we believe that Royal Challengers Bengaluru will be the ones to emerge victorious and have a winning start to the campaign. One team have their Australian pace-bowling spearhead, while the other team do not, and that will be the point of difference.

Fantasy XI: Virat Kohli (c), Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, Rajat Patidar, Heinrich Klaasen (wk), Jitesh Sharma, Tim David, Liam Livingstone, Josh Hazlewood, Suyash Sharma, Brydon Carse, Jacob Bethell (Impact Sub)
