IPL 2026: Punjab Kings SWOT Analysis

Rahul Saha Rahul Saha

Led by Shreyas Iyer on the pitch and guided by a determined coaching staff from the dugout, the Punjab Kings (PBKS) appear to be a settled unit heading into the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season.

With last season’s strong finish still fresh in their minds, the franchise will be eager to go one step further and lift their maiden IPL title.

Here, we present our SWOT analysis for the Punjab Kings ahead of the 2026 IPL season.

Strength

The 2025 season proved to be one of the most fruitful seasons for the Punjab Kings. The uncapped Indian opening duo of Priyash Arya and Prabsimran Singh set the league on fire with their breathtaking stroke play, which saw them sit comfortably in the top five for best strike rates among openers with 400 runs or more. Notably, only Mitchell Marsh of the Lucknow Super Giants scored more runs as an opener than the PBKS duo.

Led by captain Shreyas Iyer, who is likely to bat at No. 3, the Kings’ batting line-up is full of Indian talent. Only one batter in their top six is an overseas player, which gives them the leverage to tweak the team combination as per their need without compromising quality in any of the departments.

Captain Iyer also has a variety of all-round options at his disposal, which will certainly help lengthen the batting order. Quality finishers like Azmatullah Omarzai and Marco Jansen could slot in as low as Nos. 7 and 8, with either Marcus Stoinis or Cooper Connolly coming in at No. 6, giving them another bowling option alongside Shashank Singh.

Moreover, PBKS boast one of the best seam attacks in the competition, with Arshdeep Singh leading the attack alongside quality international bowlers like Marco Jansen and Lockie Ferguson, who are capable of bowling in any phase of play depending on the venue and opposition. Similar is the case with Stoinis, who can operate as per the team’s requirements.

Weakness

One of the biggest weaknesses for PBKS heading into the 2026 season, at least on paper, is the lack of experienced Indian internationals. Shreyas Iyer, Arshdeep Singh, and Yuzvendra Chahal have hundreds of international matches’ worth of experience between themselves, but they are the only ones with substantial international experience at the top level.

The likes of Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh, and Shashank Singh are central figures of this side, but they haven’t played any international cricket. This is the same issue with their bench options. Yash Thakur and Vyshak Vijaykumar have shown glimpses of quality, but as back-ups to Arshdeep Singh, they have no international caps.

Besides, Chahal was a big buy for the Kings in the mega-auction to bowl alongside Harpreet Brar in the middle overs. However, the leg-spinner didn’t have a great IPL last time out and hasn’t played too much competitive cricket since then. Thus, without a quality front-line spinner to potentially replace him, the PBKS spin department looks weak and can become a concern if Chahal doesn’t fire this season.

Opportunity

The Punjab Kings made it to their second-ever IPL final last season with a young group of players under Shreyas Iyer. PBKS invested heavily, more so on Shreyas Iyer the skipper than Shreyas Iyer the batter, and he rewarded the franchise by replicating the brilliance of his previous Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders sides.

However, this time around, many players under Iyer will just be in their second season after impressing everyone in 2025. Hence, there will be a lot of data from last season, with teams targeting their explosive youngsters in the new season with fresh ideas. If he manages to deliver another successful campaign, it would further build Iyer’s stature as a leader, especially since now he’s India’s vice-captain in ODIs.

IPL 2026 will also present itself as an opportunity for Marco Jansen to cement his place as one of the best all-rounders in the league. The South African troubled batters with his height and awkward bounce last season. However, given his recent improvements with the bat, the 25-year-old will have an even bigger role to play this season.

Threat

One of the biggest threats to the Punjab Kings’ campaign will be untimely injuries to their international pace battery. The likes of Marco Jansen, Azmatullah Omarzai, Arshdeep Singh, Marcus Stoinis, and Lockie Ferguson will all be coming into this competition following a long and gruelling T20I calendar.

Injuries to any one or two of these bowlers at the same time could hurt PBKS big time. Besides, the likes of Ferguson, Stoinis, and Jansen already have a history with injuries. Thus, any undue workload may result in losing a key player for the entire tournament.

Another threat to their play-off credentials, or possibly even a title charge, is their dismal form in Mullanpur. Last year, the Kings played ten matches here and came away with a dreadful record of just three wins and seven losses. Chasing targets was another concern with the team, who managed to win just 25% of their games while batting second, something they’d like to work on and improve upon this time around.

Securing play-off qualification shouldn’t be an issue for them, though getting over that final hurdle will require more than just talent and firepower. Whether they can finally overcome past demons is something that remains to be seen.

Probable XI/XII: Prabhsimran Singh, Priyansh Arya, Shreyas Iyer, Nehal Wadhera, Azmatullah Omarzai, Marcus Stoinis, Shashank Singh, Marco Jansen, Harpreet Brar, Lockie Ferguson, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal (Impact Sub)
