IPL 2026: Royal Challengers Bengaluru SWOT Analysis

A star-studded RCB side finally managed to capture their maiden IPL title last season against all odds, and with quite a few key additions in the mini auction, the Red Army will be looking to replicate the same form that they showed last year.

In this article, we take a look at the SWOT analysis of defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru ahead of the 2026 Indian Premier League season.

Strength

Before their 2025 triumph, Royal Challengers Bengaluru were heavily dependent on Virat Kohli, and the big name stars they attracted over the years (Faf Du Plessis, Glenn Maxwell, Chris Gayle, and AB De Villiers, to name a few). However, last season, something changed. Each match produced a different match-winner, and the dependence on Virat Kohli wasn’t as prevalent as before.

Last season, RCB had 9 different match-winners. Every win saw a different Man of the Match award winner, as everyone stepped up when it mattered the most. In some games, it was the batters who shouldered responsibility, while in others, their bowlers delivered the goods.

Heading into the 2026 season, they’ve kept most of that core intact while adding quality backups to key personnel in their starting lineup. Thus, barring too many untimely injuries, this group should hold them in good stead for another playoff run.

Weakness

RCB’s biggest concern heading into the 2026 season is their fragile bowling attack. Even before their pre-season camp, there has been a lot of uncertainty especially concerning the availability of Josh Hazlewood and Yash Dayal – both instrumental to their success last season.

It has been confirmed that the Australian will miss the start of the season – possibly two to three games – but given his recurring injury bouts, they can’t rely on the 35-year-old to last the full season, which is a concern given his 22 wickets last season were vital to RCB lifting their maiden title.

Apart from Hazlewood, they have Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Krunal Pandya, Romario Shepherd and Suyash Sharma in their bowling attack. While Bhuvi still instills confidence in the team, the others don’t. Krunal had a breakthrough season last year, taking a career best 17-wickets in a season, while both Romario and Suyash aren’t reliable wicket-takers and can be expensive from time to time.

There is also no certainty about Yash Dayal’s participation in the IPL 2026 season. Although they have roped in a similar profile in Mangesh Yadav, with Rasikh Dar also waiting in the wings. Thus, how well these uncapped bowlers can perform under pressure and whether they can deliver the goods remains to be seen.

Opportunity

The defending champions have a great opportunity to join the Mumbai Indians and the Chennai Super Kings in achieving a rare IPL feat. If this Rajat Patidar led RCB side can manage to retain their title, they will become only the third team after the two names mentioned above to win back-to-back IPL championships.

CSK won the IPL in 2010, and they retained their crown in 2011. Similarly, MI won in 2019, and 2020 to attain the feat. Now, RCB also has the same chance to enter an elusive list by winning the title in the upcoming campaign.

In terms of players, the 2026 season will be a huge litmus test for Venkatesh Iyer, the Madhya Pradesh batter had a torrid 2025 season after the Kolkata Knight Riders signed him for a mammoth INR 23.75 crore during the mega auction. However, given his modest returns, KKR released him ahead of the mini auction.

One man’s loss is another’s gain. Given his relationship with RCB skipper Rajat Patidar, the Royal Challengers swooped in and signed Iyer at the mini auction for just INR 7 crore – compared to what KKR paid. Since RCB struggled with a left-handed aggressor in the top order with Devdutt Padikkal failing to capitalise on solid starts and taking the game to the opposition, someone like Venkatesh Iyer in a small ground like the Chinnaswamy is the perfect candidate to play that role.

Threat

Injuries and questions surrounding the availability of certain key players pose the biggest threat to their IPL title defence. Unlike last season, things aren’t as rosy as one would like. RCB’s best bowler, Josh Hazlewood, who has been out of action for quite some time now, will feature for the team only after a few games. Thus, expecting him to come in and hit the ground running while also expecting him to last the season will be too optimistic in my humble opinion.

Apart from him, compatriot Tim David is also nursing a hamstring injury, and has played very little competitive cricket since January 2026. As one of RCB’s main finishers, he is currently indispensable to this team, and the management will miss his services if the Aussie gets ruled out of the marquee event.

Thus, despite retaining most of their title winning side, there are fragilities in this squad. Although this side is still good enough to make the playoffs, they need another perfect season with minimal injuries and everybody chipping in to retain their IPL title.

Probable XI/XII: Phil Salt, Virat Kohli, Venkatesh Iyer, Rajat Patidar, Jitesh Sharma, Tim David, Romario Shepherd, Krunal Pandya, Suyash Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Josh Hazlewood, Mangesh Yadav/Rasikh Dar (Impact Sub)

Prediction: 4th
