IPL 2026: SunRisers Hyderabad SWOT Analysis
Led by Pat Cummins, SunRisers Hyderabad finished sixth in the ten-team Indian Premier League table last season, losing seven of their 14 league-stage matches. Coming into the 2026 IPL season, SRH will be eager to bounce back and silence their critics.
Here, we present our SWOT analysis for SunRisers Hyderabad ahead of the 2026 IPL season.
Strength
The SunRisers have an incredibly deep batting line-up. Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, and Ishan Kishan form a destructive top order, while the likes of Heinrich Klaasen, Aniket Verma, and Nitish Kumar Reddy solidify the middle order. Bowling all-rounders Harshal Patel and Pat Cummins can also play handy cameos lower down the order, making for a fearsome batting card for any opposition.
Sharma, Head, and Kishan have terrorised bowling attacks in the past, and if they can click once again this season, there’s every chance the Orange Army will bamboozle opponents like they did in 2024.
Besides, stand-in skipper Ishan Kishan’s red-hot recent form (317 runs in nine innings, striking at 193.29) makes him a vital cog in the SunRisers’ top order. Klaasen, meanwhile, is a menace against spin bowling, while both Reddy and Aniket can emerge as genuine match-winners in the middle and death overs.
Additionally, the SunRisers have strengthened their all-rounders’ department with some good additions. While Abhishek Sharma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Kamindu Mendis, Harshal Patel, Harsh Dubey, and Brydon Carse all made it into the SRH retention list, the 2016 champions also roped in Liam Livingstone, Shivang Kumar, Krains Fuletra, and Jack Edwards in the IPL 2026 auction. Given that most of them have international experience, these additions ensure quality and flexibility.
Weakness
There is a definite weakness in the SRH bowling department, especially since they released an experienced and marquee player like Mohammed Shami ahead of the mini-auction. While Jaydev Unadkat is at the fag end of his career, the likes of Sakib Hussain, Onkar Tarmale, and Praful Hinge have yet to prove their mettle in the IPL. While SRH also have Shivam Mavi in their ranks, his injury record speaks for itself, whereas the 2021 Purple Cap winner, Harshal Patel, has also been up and down with his form of late.
As far as their international stars are concerned, skipper Pat Cummins is yet to recover from his back injury, which ruled him out of the T20 World Cup altogether and has also sidelined him for the initial stage of this season. The likes of Ehsan Malinga and Brydon Carse are capable of providing support, but which combination the management will go with remains uncertain.
Moreover, even if all their injury-prone players get fit and are available, SRH’s death bowling could be a major issue this season, as evidenced by their performances last year.
Opportunity
Pat Cummins scripted history as he led his team to a historic ODI World Cup triumph in 2023. The veteran cricketer is also the lone Australian skipper to win the World Test Championship. However, he has yet to get his hands on the IPL trophy.
Although Cummins led SRH to the IPL 2024 final, the Orange Army lost the ultimate clash to the Kolkata Knight Riders?—?his former side, no less. So, considering the IPL trophy has eluded him, this season he has a golden opportunity to end his team’s ten-year trophy drought.
In terms of players and opportunities, there are two uncapped Indian batters who have made a lot of noise in the domestic circuit recently and stand a chance of making their IPL debut this season. Top-order batter Smaran Ravichandran had an excellent SMAT 2025, scoring 319 runs in seven innings at a strike rate of 158.71, while Punjab-based middle-order batter Salil Arora scored 358 runs in eight innings at a strike rate of 198.9. Moreover, in their recent intra-squad match, Arora batted for both sides and posted scores of 46 off 17 and an unbeaten 56 off 23. Thus, there is a high probability that one of these batters will come in as an Impact Sub to further strengthen SRH’s already explosive batting order.
Threat
Alongside their pace battery, SRH’s spin department also looks weaker on paper. Although Zeeshan Ansari looked promising with the ball last season, while Harsh Dubey, in his three opportunities, also did quite well, the SunRisers still lack a quality spin bowler to control the middle overs.
They also have Liam Livingstone and Kamindu Mendis as part of their international stars contingent, and both of them can bowl a bit of spin, while the uncapped duo of Amit Kumar and Praful Hinge have only played six List A matches combined. So, the pressure will fall on the likes of Zeeshan Ansari and Harsh Dubey to shoulder the responsibility of controlling the middle overs.
Thus, despite a quality playing XI and the presence of exceptional power-hitters throughout their batting line-up, SunRisers Hyderabad lack consistency and have a very weak bowling attack on paper. Hence, we expect SRH to face similar issues to those they did last season and miss out on the play-offs this time around as well.
Probable XI/XII: Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, Ishan Kishan, Heinrich Klaasen, Aniket Verma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Liam Livingstone/Kamindu Mendis, Pat Cummins, Harsh Dubey, Harshal Patel, Jaydev Unadkat, Salil Arora/Shivam Mavi (Impact Sub)
Prediction: 8th
