While both England and the West Indies have started their respective campaigns with a win, the manner of their wins could not have been more different.

England were given an almighty scare by Nepal, who almost pulled off the upset of the tournament on day two. Batting first, England put up 184 in their 20 overs, which was only possible courtesy of Will Jacks’ pyrotechnics towards the end, which resulted in a 45-run plunder in the final three overs to put some gloss on what was a pretty middling batting performance up until then.

In response, England were put under the cosh severely, as Nepal did not care for the reputation of their more illustrious counterparts and fearlessly took the attack to them. Adil Rashid and Jofra Archer were ruthlessly taken to the cleaners, and soon the English began to feel that the unthinkable might happen.

It took a spectacular and peerless final over from Sam Curran to bring some sense of normalcy back to the English effort, but deep down the whole camp will remember the scare of their lives they experienced in Mumbai for quite some time.

There are a lot of areas that need work. Archer will have to massively improve his bowling, while Rashid will be inclined to believe that the shellacking he got was just a one-off. The batting will have to contribute in a much better way than they did in the last game, with more expected from the likes of Tom Banton and Sam Curran with the bat. Against a side like the West Indies, one slip-up could make them pay, given the power and quality in the Caribbean camp.

Speaking of the West Indies, the Calypso boys began their tournament in style, beating Scotland by a comfortable margin of 35 runs. While there were quite a few stars in that convincing victory, with Shimron Hetmyer’s blazing 64 and Jason Holder’s three-wicket haul deserving special mentions, it was Romario Shepherd who was the Windies’ hero of the match, and not with his usual belligerence with the bat.

It was with the ball that Shepherd made an indelible mark in the contest. With Scotland rather evenly poised to make a good fist of the chase with five wickets still in hand, he caused absolute mayhem with the ball, taking a hat-trick in the 17th over and finishing the over having plucked four wickets in the space of five deliveries, killing Scotland’s hopes of chasing down the total in devastating fashion. He finished with match figures of 5/20 in three overs, and his welcome contribution with the ball will bode well for his side’s hopes of going further in the tournament.

Here are two power-packed sides who have some of the world’s best T20 players in their ranks. This is a contest that is bound to cause fireworks, but in the battle of the power-hitters, we believe it is the West Indies who are the favourites for a win here.
