ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 | Final: IND vs NZ | 19:00 IST, March 8, 2026
India have made it to the final after seeing off an incredible scare from Jacob Bethell and England. The hosts are looking to create history by becoming the first-ever team to win back-to-back Men’s T20 World Cup titles as well as become the first host nation to go all the way in the history of the tournament.
The Men in Blue haven’t had the smoothest road to the final, having struggled to put up a strong performance as a cohesive unit. But they have slowly worked on making all three departments work together.
Having one of the most dangerous batting line-ups on paper, India’s biggest headache heading into the final will be the form of their star opener Abhishek Sharma, who is yet to have an innings of substance in the tournament. What has worked in India’s favour, however, is Ishan Kishan’s continued red-hot form. Alongside him, Sanju Samson has grabbed his opportunity with both hands and played two game-changing knocks against the West Indies in Kolkata and England in Mumbai. Captain Suryakumar Yadav is another one who also has been short of runs, though the middle order has provided crucial and impactful cameos whenever needed, something the Indian management will expect again in the final.
Bowling has been the biggest cause of concern for India, who have been a bit too reliant on Jasprit Bumrah. The veteran pacer has bailed his team out on multiple occasions, and while there were times when the other bowlers have made an impact, on flat and batter-friendly wickets in India, most bowlers in the side have gone for plenty of runs. That said, Hardik Pandya’s form with the ball, especially after he stepped up in the semi-final, will be a positive sign for the hosts going into the final, and the team will hope the rest of the bowling unit steps up as well and keeps a check on the runs.
New Zealand, on the other hand, have had a more stable run into the final and have shown themselves to be one of the more dominant teams this time around.
The Kiwis have had their explosive opening pair of Tim Seifert and Finn Allen do the heavy lifting with the bat. Rachin Ravindra, who came into the World Cup on the back of a woeful run, has stepped up when needed, proving key coming in at No. 3. New Zealand’s only concern will be the fact that their middle order hasn’t had a lot of opportunities and, therefore, doesn’t have a lot of runs.
The Kiwi bowling unit has worked well together. The pace attack of Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson has been economical and among the wickets at the top, with slower bowlers Mitchell Santner, Rachin Ravindra, and Cole McConchie putting teams in a chokehold in the middle overs later on. On a flat wicket likely to offer some support for bowlers who make the most of variations, New Zealand’s slow bowling attack will be key.
The Ahmedabad strip is known to be a relatively flat wicket with plenty of runs on offer, so batters will be key and remain in the mix throughout the game.
Being the hosts, and given the strength of their squad on paper, India may start the final as favourites. However, their bowling unit has been leaking runs, and the team have become overly dependent on Jasprit Bumrah.
This might be a surprise prediction, but we are backing New Zealand to win the game and the World Cup given their prowess and recent form across all three departments for the majority of the tournament.
