F1 2026: Canadian Grand Prix Preview and Predictions
Formula One returns this weekend as the grid heads to Montreal for the Canadian Grand Prix 2026. While racing resumes, we also have a couple of teams looking to take the fight to the championship favourites Mercedes, as McLaren, Ferrari and Red Bull Racing seem like they have announced themselves in the title fight.
Ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix 2026, here’s our race preview and predictions.
A new name in the championship?
Up until the Miami Grand Prix, the Formula One 2026 season seemed like it was a one-team show as Mercedes were running away with the Championship. After a month-long break, before the teams headed to Miami a host of teams brought about upgrades to Miami and McLaren seems like they are right in the mix. Ferrari already showed pace and while it might not be on the same level as Mercedes, they have shown strong race pace and Red Bull trimming some weight also saw them put their name in the hat.
McLaren scored their first double podium of the season in Miami and Piastri has scored back-to-back podiums in Japan and Miami with McLaren’s fortunes looking like they are turning for the good. McLaren’s aerodynamic deficit was addressed in the upgrades brought to Miami and along with front corner and sidepod upgrades, McLaren also brought a new rear wing to Miami along with upgraded endplates. McLaren are scheduled to bring another set of upgrades to Canada and the Papaya team are once again favourites to be in the run for the race win along with Mercedes and while they sit third in the Championship standing, 16 points behind Ferrari, don’t expect McLaren to stay away from the second spot for too long.
Pole prediction: George Russell / Oscar Piastri
Race winners prediction: Mercedes / McLaren
How long will the one-man show go on for?
It’s not unusual for Max Verstappen to be leading the fight for Red Bull single-handedly, he has done it for many seasons now and it looks like the four-time World Champion is once again Red Bull’s only shining hope. Red Bull have suffered a tough start to the season with both Verstappen and his teammate, Isack Hadjar, being vocal about their displeasure with the Red Bull car.
Red Bull not only reduced the weight of their car but brought about a host of changes to Miami as well including front wing, endplate, front wheel ducts, sidepod inlet, a new floor and the rear wing. The results showed instantly in Miami as Verstappen showed one-lap pace, qualifying second and had solid race pace as well, keeping up with the Mercedeses and also finishing ahead of both Ferraris. With Canada set to be another Sprint weekend, Verstappen will have more scoring opportunities and could catch some of those drivers in the front of the Drivers’ Championship standing.
Not there yet
Two teams who would’ve come into the Formula One 2026 season looking to move up the midfield and make the most of the new regulation changes would have been the British duo of Williams Racing and Aston Martin. After having spent time in the middle of midfield for the last couple of years and with Williams themselves seeing a rise to the midfield from the bottom of the field, expectations were high but like a lot of the teams on the grid, they have struggled with Aston Martin probably being the team most behind the others.
Aston Martin started the season as one of the slowest cars on the grid with vibrations being their biggest headache as the drivers were quite literally unable to drive the car due to the severe vibrations. In fact the vibrations made reliability such a big issue that after three races, only in Miami last time around did Fernando Alonso manage to see the chequered flag as the team addressed their vibration issues. But that though, isn’t the end of their problems as the vibrations might have been handled but Aston Martin revealed they still have gearbox issues and while the Silverstone based team might have fixed one issue, there are plenty more issues pending and Alonso and Lance Stroll might finish the race in Montreal but don’t expect them to become competitive immediately.
Another team who started with issues but upgrades in Miami helped unlock some performance was Williams Racing. Bringing almost 5000 new parts to Miami, Williams showed some progress on the aerodynamic front but Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz’s challenger was anything but competitive. Like Red Bull, Williams also sees their challenger, the FW48, be heavier than they expected which is a big issue. Once in the middle of the season, we probably will see Williams be much more competitive and a regular midfield team but currently, don’t expect Williams Racing or Aston Martin to bring instant competitiveness to Canada.
