Mexico vs South Korea | FIFA World Cup 2026 — Group Stage | Preview and Prediction
The Mexico and South Korean bromance has been one of the feel-good stories coming out of the World Cup this year. However, they will be on the opposite sides of the divide as both sides meet in a Group A clash where the winner will more or less win the group and a place in the Round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Here is our Preview and Predictions for the game.
FIFA WC26 | Group A: MEX vs KOR | 06:30 IST, June 19, 2026
Both Mexico and South Korea were the victorious sides in group A after the first round of fixtures. While co-hosts Mexico took care of business courtesy a 2-0 win over South Africa in the opening game of the World Cup, South Korea registered a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Czechia to get their 3 points to kickstart their tournament.
Mexico had a great start to their home tournament. They dominated the ball, kept South Africa on their toes and ran them ragged with their direct style of play. South Africa could not keep up with the running and direct nature of the Mexicans and that bodes well for Mexico against tougher opponents.
While Mexico will definitely feel that they should have won by more given that South Africa were reduced to 9 men, they will nonetheless be happy with the win and will definitely look for more of the same against their latest opponents.
South Korea will be buoyed by the comeback victory against the Czechs, but there will be some areas of their game that they will be refining on the training ground.
For starters, they were easily outmatched in aerial battles by the Czechs, and that is exactly how they conceded the goal as well. Despite having the likes of Kim Min-Jae, they failed to put any sort of aerial pressure on Czechia and were easily outmatched and outmuscled in the air as well as physically.
Secondly, they will hope that their talisman and star player Heung-min Son had only an off-day in the first game. It was not the best of outings for Son as he was rather wasteful in front of goal, failing to find the net despite having 5 chances to do so.
However, South Korea will definitely be pleased with the way they came back to win the game. Their technical superiority and passing range means that they always looked likely to make opportunities for themselves, and both their goals came out of well-crafted passing moves.
This is bound to be a very lively contest on the pitch. Mexico are known to be a side that relies on a high press, while the Koreans thrive on spaces and half-spaces which can be exploited given that Mexico deploy a high line. Whoever manages to make the most out of those pockets of opportunities will eventually end up winning the game.
This game promises goals and actions so it is all set to be anything but drab. However, we believe that South Korea edge Mexico for the favourites given that Mexico might tend to lose their way emotionally and that the pressure of being hosts might be telling against a technically superior opponent.
Score Predictions: Mexico 1- 3 South Korea
Venue: Estadio Guadalajara, Zapopan.
