Biggest 2022 summer transfer window moves so far: Premier League edition

The 2022-23 Premier League season has seen many anticipated yet exciting transfers this summer. With several youngsters of class joining the league and decorated veterans also signing with big teams, the English topflight is once again ready to prove its rank as the best football league in Europe. The stage is set, the players are hungry, and the roller-coaster matchdays are already underway.

This summer, Premier League teams have already spent well over £2 billion, with a net spend of around £800 million.

In this article, we take a look at the top 2022 summer transfers in the Premier League who, I believe, are set to make the biggest impact this season.

#10 Casemiro

Team: Manchester United
Position: Midfielder
Transfer fee: £63.59 million

After dominating Spain for several years, Casemiro has now arrived in the Premier League. Having joined Manchester United, Casemiro becomes the second-most decorated player in the team after Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Brazilian defensive midfielder is the central force Erik ten Hag eagerly needed. With him and Christian Eriksen in midfield, Man United now have some much-needed experience in their midfield.

The Red Devils have made big changes this summer and are hoping to bring their golden days back.

#9 Alexander Isak

Team: Newcastle United
Position: Forward
Transfer fee: £63 million

The richest club in Europe were expected to sign a lot of players, but that did not really come about. Newcastle United have, though, signed Alexander Isak from Real Sociedad in a very hopeful deal. The Swedish forward is a great poacher and could help Newcastle reach the levels they aspire to be at.

#8 Marc Cucurella

Team: Chelsea
Position: Defender
Transfer fee: £58.77 million

Marc Cucurella became one of the biggest signings for the Blues after moving on from Brighton & Hove Albion after just one season. The Spaniard used to spend time either out on loan or as a reserve player during his Barcelona days before becoming a prominent player for Brighton. His defending ability, pace and skill to take the ball upfield are what impressed the London side.

Chelsea are looking to further strengthen their defence after several departures this summer.

#7 Antony

Team: Manchester United
Position: Forward
Transfer fee: £85.50 million

Antony is the latest Brazilian magician in the new era of football. His dribbling skills, explosive pace and playmaking ability have been talked about since his early days in Amsterdam. The 22-year-old has recently made his move from Ajax to Manchester United to reunite with Erik ten Hag.

#6 Lisandro Martínez

Team: Manchester United
Position: Defender
Transfer fee: £51.63 million

Lisandro Martínez is a very energetic defender who plays every minute of the 90 with the same intensity and flair. The Argentine also made the journey from Ajax to Manchester United to reunite with Erik ten Hag. The 24-year-old is fast, physical, fearless and full of stamina, which gives the Manchester side the intensity they have been lacking for the past few seasons.

#5 Raheem Sterling

Team: Chelsea
Position: Forward
Transfer fee: £50.58 million

Raheem Sterling is a quick forward who can skill his way into the box and score, assist or even win penalties with his strong ball control. He is everything his new team Chelsea needed after ending the 2021-22 season with defeats in finals of multiple tournaments.

The 27-year-old is a great addition for the Blues to create a threat in the final third. After getting into the habit of winning titles with Manchester City, Sterling is expecting to continue the streak in London.

#4 Richarlison

Team: Tottenham Hotspur
Position: Forward
Transfer fee: £52.20 million

As Tottenham Hotspur return to the Champions League this season, they have made their presence felt in the summer transfer window. They have signed Richarlison to partner Harry Kane as a game-changer substitute. The Brazilian specialises in combining with the central players, pass-and-move attacks, and defensive track-backs. Tottenham will be on lock-down defence while still being an attacking threat on the left wing with their two new signings Richarlison and Ivan Periši?.

#3 Gabriel Jesus

Team: Arsenal
Position: Forward
Transfer fee: £46.98 million

Gabriel Jesus had a deal in place with Manchester City until 2023 but was excluded from Pep Guardiola’s plans ahead of this season. The 25-year-old Brazilian striker has thus signed with Arsenal as their preferred legs up front. Jesus left Manchester in amazing form and carried it into the pre-season, subsequently creating history by becoming the most picked player ever in Fantasy Premier League history.

#2 Darwin Núñez

Team: Liverpool

Position: Forward

Transfer fee: £67.50 million

Darwin Núñez is a Uruguayan striker who has joined Liverpool from SL Benfica. The 23-year-old is a fast centre-forward with the dribbling skills of a winger who can beat defenders one-on-one to make room for his shot.

Núñez impressed Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp with his electric performances against his team in the UEFA Champions League last season. The youngster is expected to replace Roberto Firmino as the striking choice for the German manager.

With the departure of Sadio Mané, it will be exciting to see whether the Uruguayan can help Liverpool lift the two major trophies (Premier League and Champions League) they almost got their hands on last season.

#1 Erling Haaland

Team: Manchester City
Position: Forward
Transfer fee: £54 million

Erling Haaland is arguably one of the biggest young talents in the football world right now. The Norwegian is anticipated to surpass the GOATs in scoring with his current goal-conversion rate.

Haaland is a striking beast known for his pace, physicality, powerful shots and lethal poaching ability. He has joined Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund to become the starting striker for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Manchester City won the 2021-22 Premier League title with their striker Gabriel Jesus only starting 21 games for them. Now that the Cityzens have a proper No. 9 to start most games, it will be very interesting to see how much more titles they go on to bag.
