FPL: BEST CAPTAIN CHOICES FOR GAMEWEEK 3

The list for the top 5 Captain choices for Gameweek 3 of the 2021/22 FPL season has some big names missing, with Chelsea facing Liverpool and Wolves hosting Manchester United.

Gameweek 3 of the 2021/22 season brings us some great fixtures with potentially high-rewarding mid-priced players and a few premium players to keep an eye on.

Liverpool hosting Thomas Tuchel‘s Chelsea at Anfield will be a tasty encounter from the neutral perspective, but in FPL terms it’s a bad fixture if you own a player from either side. Meanwhile, Wolverhampton Wanderers will be hosting Manchester United at Molineux Stadium and it will not be a plain sailing for Ole Gunnar Solskjær and his men.

With all that in mind, let’s take a look at our best captaincy picks for Gameweek 3.

#5 Patrick Bamford (£7.9m) | Opponent: BUR (A)

The Leeds United forward finally has an attacking output to his name, albeit an assist against Everton, having set up Mateusz Klich (£5.5m) for an equaliser. Patrick Bamford looked dangerous against the Toffees, and against a Burnley team who are likely to happily concede possession, Bamford has a great opportunity to get the monkey off his back and grab his first goal of the season.

Burnley looked decent in their away trip to Anfield, but against Leeds’ attacking firepower it is highly unlikely they will be able to contain them. Players like Raphinha (£6.5m), Jack Harrison (£5.9m), Mateusz Klich (£5.5m) and Luke Ayling (£4.5m) will all be heavily involved.

#4 Danny Ings (£8.1m) | Opponent: BRE (H)

Thomas Frank’s men have conceded 29 shots so far from their opening two fixtures but have remarkably come out of them with two clean sheets. This is bound to stop somewhere, and I believe Danny Ings and co have more than enough to break that Brentford defence line.

Although Aston Villa have lacked that cutting edge and clear chances are created few and far between, it was expected that this would happen given their change in system. But the Villains should have enough in the bag given that Brentford conceded those shots against an inexperienced Arsenal forward line and a subpar Crystal Palace attack.

#3 Heung-Min Son (£10.0m) | Opponent: WAT (H)

Harry Kane (£12.3m) is finally staying put at Tottenham Hotspur and no other player would be happier than his partner-in-crime, Heung-Min Son. The South Korean has always produced his best when he has his captain alongside him and stats back that up as well. Son’s expected goals (xG) and assists per 90 (xA) with Kane on the pitch are 0.32 and 0.31 respectively. While playing that Inside-forward role, his goals per 90 touches an impressive 0.52.

Without Kane, his numbers drop to (xG) 0.27 and (xA) 0.07 respectively. Having Harry Kane back against Watford this weekend will definitely help Nuno Espírito Santo unlock Heung-Min Son again.

#2 Jamie Vardy (£10.5m) | Opponent: NOR (A)

Brendan Rodgers and his team must be itching to get back onto the pitch following last week’s humiliating 4-1 defeat to West Ham United. They face a trip to Carrow Road to face Norwich City, who themselves have shipped five last week and eight overall in two games. Rodgers and his team couldn’t have wished for a better fixture.

Daniel Farke’s men will press Leicester high up the pitch, leaving vast acres of space for someone like Jamie Vardy to run in behind and guide the ball past Tim Krul’s (£4.5m) outstretched fingers. Vardy would definitely be licking his lips in anticipation of the chances he’s going to get. I can easily see him score a goal or two and bag double-digit points.

#1 Michail Antonio (£7.7m) | Opponent: CRY (H)

The hottest property in FPL right now, Michail Antonio has been the standout player in the Premier League after the first two Gameweeks, reflected by his three goals and three assists. The Hammers #9 will face Patrick Vieira’s Crystal Palace who themselves are defensively vulnerable and their philosophy of playing out of the back will keep the West Ham forward line interested.

Antonio, at the bare minimum, should return an attacking output given West Ham United’s explosive firepower with the likes of Saïd Benrahma (£6.2m), Pablo Fornals (£6.0m), and a towering box-to-box midfielder in Tomáš Sou?ek (£6.0m). Whenever fit, you’ve got to have Michail Antonio. If he can stay fit for 38 games, he’ll be right up there for the Golden Boot race.
